Electro-Voice Sentry 500 vs Altec Lansing model 19 for studio work

Hard to say. Studio work typically eschews big colorful speakers such as those, in favor of flatness. The venerable NS-10 by Yamaha isn't an especially pleasing speaker, but works well when critical listening is needed.

I'm sure others will help you. WELCOME TO AK!!

EDIT - Apparently, and I was completely unaware of this, BOTH speakers would work swimmingly as monitors. My apologies for any confusion.

Altec model 19 for primary . If they are the secondary, I love to hear the primary monitors.

IME, the Model 19s can be adjusted for flatter, more linear response than the EV Sentry 500s... the adjustment controls are more "powerful" in the effect they can have, in a useful manner.

It's not that the Sentry 500s are bad- far from it- but the Altecs just are a little more sophisticated.

Gordon.

Well the Altecs are more efficient for sure and with the added filter network are flat to 20,000 HZ. Both reach about the same frequencies in the bass. Yes the Altecs will be more revealing at a greater distance from the EV because of the horn. You can find the factory spec sheets on the internet. The files are to large or I would have down loaded them here.

First Altecs Bob Ludwig worked with were 604E.

Pretty sure he's still using Eggleston Works Ivy Signatures today.

He talks about the Egglestons and Cello power amps about 39 mins in here:
