Electrovoice Interface D Speakers

i have been trying to track down a new set of plugs and cant find them so am going to shoot of an email to ev australia and perhaps they can help.. trying to find a 9 pin plug to suit these is turning out to be a hastle.. but worth it they sound excellent as they are, it's just curiosity i guess.. thanks people for your help and kind words

Here's a picture of what the other side of the base looks like. I've circled the part where the plug would go (kind of hard to see it clearly.... but you'll get over that I'm sure :D)

What I think I'd do if I were you is have some of these crossover experts look at something like this and tell you what to hard wire to what and basically, bypass the plug. Or, maybe you could make some jumpers (gator clips?) and make some connections??

I've got a picture of the plugs themselvs SOMEWHERE.... still looking for them.

Do you have the original plugs at all? You might be able to simply modify them with pins.

Side comment... I've got a scan of the owners manual (one page attached to show the biamp commentary). I've also got a glossy brochure (since 1978!) about the speakers...AND, I've got a 1978 High Fidelity Magazine scan of a nice review about them.

If you (or anyone) want to send me your email, I'll send the whole wad to you.

have noticed a rather large responce difference between having them bi-amped and not

Could it be differernces in the amp?

Are they level matched? I presume they are and you know what to do. If not, this might help.

Forumla is 20*Log(V1/V2) where V1 and V2 are the two input sensativities of the amps. Doesn't matter which one is on top/bottom AS LONG as you keep that in mind. All it will do is give you a number, either positive or negative. Meaning, the answer will be something like "4" or (4) as in negative. The point there is the more sensative amp would need to be attenuated inside your active crossover by 4 db's. Once you do that then the two amps would be level matched.

You want to really shake & boogy? Get yourself a dbx 3bx and attach a dbx subharmonic synthesizer to it and THEN let them boogers crank.

Just make sure that your walls are secure as you will be feeling them shake.

I think these are capable of -3db at 28hz at 106 db if I remember the specs (and if they're accurate)

HA, found them. I've already posted them

These are the plugs to be used when biamped.

ahhh huh, I understood everything you said right up till "If not this might help" :D

I should reply properly Coytee :music:

I had the plugs to make the speakers Bi-amped. just not the other way around.

as for the amps being matched, it's just what i was given when I bought the speakers, funny story there, i bought the speakers off ebay and when i got them home i noticed that one of the woofers had broken foams so i rang him back and he said u can have the amps and other equipment for free as long as i still gave him 100% feedback still.. i accecpted of course. back to the point..

as i have stated one of the amps is a hafler 500 which i am useing for the low end speakers and the perreaux 1850 for the top end, as for being matched. who cares the speakers are really loud :D i have adjusted the electronic crossover ev tapco ex-18, to about 250hz crossover, the manual which i do have for the interface d's (thanks coytee for the offer of a copy) say that the crossover point should be about 350 hz.. i have just been having fun listening to the speakers experimenting with the crossover and the level of the high end. i'm thinking of getting a new crossover something that allows me to adjust the crossover point for the top and bottom end perhaps with level control on both. perhaps a few suggestions from people would help..

i have a yamaha 2031 eq, i have not bothered to connect it to the system yet, I will be doing that at a later time, like when i can be bothered pulling out a soldering iron and making correct length cables for the rack to suit most of the equipment, i have the manuals for all of this equipment which after so many years is amazing..

Perhaps you misunderstood my question. I don't mean are they sonically matched in some sort of audiophiole way....but rather, are they level matched with regard to their input sensativity.

Meaning... (and I preface this with the admission that I know NOTHING about your amps)

If one has an input sensativty of say, 1 volt and the other has an input sensativity of say, 2 1/2 volts then you might have a balance issue. What that means is when the first amp hits 1 volt of input then it's going to be going 100% balls to the wall even though the other amp will need 2 1/2 volts to "match" going balls to the wall.

Meaning in a practical sense.... one amp will be playing louder than the other at all ranges of your volume control.

The Forumla above would give you "20*log(1/2.5)" which gives you an answer of "8". This tells you that the amp with the input sensativty of 1.0 needs to be attenuated by 8 db's (which you could do in your active crossover) and NOW they will be properly level matched with regard to their output at any given input level by your preamp.

I biamp and use an active. I've had to learn about this because I've used solid state amps, tube amps and mixed the two. I've had issues trying to figure out how to level match them because "one is louder than the other". The example I gave was in fact from two of my amps.

I had NO idea what was going on from the technical side of it. I was trying to do things by ear...until I was talking about it and a speaker engineer gave me the answer above (forumla).

It might not be the issue you were talking about so I might be rambling. My wife says I do that....at least 80% of each day :D (and I'm sleeping the other 20%)

In case it was your issue, I wanted to share how to resolve it.

Yes. My understanding (as a newcomer to actives) is it's a fairly sophisticated unit.

It's 2-in, 4 out with some DSP in between. I've got a handful of PEQ's available for each input and seperate from that, some for each output. I can do some signal delay and match input levels when using amps of differing input sensativities.

It's a 3+ meg file, but here's their brochure on the Dx
It's been replaced with a new unit by now so it's discontinued. I bought mine prior to that and currently own two of them. One is out on loan so someone can play with it on their 2-way speakers.

With that RACE software that thing would be just incredible to use for live performances. For what it is the price is very good in my view. It would be so cool to have those features available to use in the home.
