As Willyrover says. Normal Adds a resister in series to tweeter. Decrease adds a second resister. For lower tweeter volume. I believe, if alike my New Large Advents. For different rooms and ears.

Sizzle, smooth and laid back. But as stated use the one you like. That is why it is there.

The crux of the matter is that you set it at whichever sounds best to you.

If you have a lot of reflective surfaces in your listening area you likely want to decrease the higher frequencies some
Or avoid extended

If you have a lot of fabrics and carpeting you likely want normal
or less frequently extended
As more of those upper frequencies get absorbed and itll sound duller and bass heavy

On advents id suspect normal to sound best in most circumstances

Depends on how bright/shrill or dark/veiled the tweeter is to your ears
and the environment theyre in


Best setting in terms of response is probably normal/extended on most speakers then outfit the room to accommodate that sound

If they are the walnut bull nose cabinets they are the New Large Advents. All-metal woofer frame, no masonite ring. That’s what I’ve been running since 1978, although the vinyl-clad cabinets.

The original bevel nose cabinets are commonly and mistakenly called "bull-nosed" but they really should be called "bevel nosed". The bull-nosed cabinets are the rounded edge cabinets on the New Advents as Spruce Moose indicated.

There were two families of the Large Advent - original and "new". The New Advent had a number of changes including moving the woofer closer to the tweeter, using ferrofluid cooling for tweeter, simpler crossover design and changes to tweeter switch level. Old woofer had masonite ring while newer one used metal frame.

Note that the relative tweeter level increased with the New Advent where "Normal" was approximately the same as "Extended" with the original. I have the New flavor and usually run "normal" unless the source is especially bright.

And don't let anyone tell you that Advents can't sound good. Given good source, amp, positon and room, in my opinion. For me the decrease position on New Large Advents tames the tweeter, for my ears and room. I like them on 8" tall slanted stands away from back wall foot or two. Today powered by tubes.
