favorite vintage JBL speakers?

Sansui_SP-5500_4-Way_Speakers_Speaker_web.jpg

I take it the JBL drivers are the compression drivers? Got pics?

Sorry, no way to post pictures right now

OK.. Ya'll have seen them already, but I'll put them here here for prosperity.. (scuse the mess)

I say vintage.. figure they are between 20 and 25 years old.. no one has yet to define vintage to me to where I even agree with the word being used.. but oh well.. .

Yep, I've become partial to my 4675's now... I've heard a lot of JBL speakers, but these are the most dynamic and enjoyable JBL's I've owned...

Introduced in 1984, first "theater" speaker from JBL, first JBL's to receive THX certification. They have a solid place in the history of audio. One of their first installations was in The Motion Picture Academy.

James, if your better half is nagging you about what you'd like for xmas, the book by John Eargle "The JBL Story" should be on your list. Lots of little informational tidbits you just won't find elsewhere. For instance, did you know that Jim Lansing designed the Altec 604? Or, that he was co-designer of The Voice of the Theater series of speaker systems?

Sounds like a book I need to get... and believe it or not.. Yes I knew about him and his work with Altec.. They weren't known as Altec Lansing, just because they liked his name ;)

And cause I learned stuff like that here and from you and Zilch previously.. :thmbsp:

OK, how about Sid Harman selling HII(which included JBL, Tannoy, and Ortofon) to Beatrice Foods in 1977 when he became Under-Secretary of Commerce under Jimmy Carter?

He bought it back in '79 after he left his gov position.:D

That was a new one for me, JBL owned by Beatrice foods........... whodathunkit?

Here's the sheet for the 4675A which is what I have with the 2225H woofers.. .I like this sheet.. Nice parts breakdown, and I like noting that yes, mine has the rubber rings on the woofers too. I'm sure a lot of those are long gone..

I'm sure though you would be hard pressed to hear the difference between the A and C versions.. .and also, mine does not have the factory crossovers or networks shown. I'm sure that was an option that wasn't bought. Appears to be no where they were ever mounted.

Also. mine has the 2445J horn drivers, which are 16ohm, so probably a little easier to drive than the H (8 ohm) on the C version speakers

Ya know.. after looking at that schematic for the crossover network, I wonder how hard it would be to get all the parts.. and better yet.. how expensive... not real sure about those coils I'm seeing ..

Another edit.. eewww... I didn't realize the bottom end was wired to 4 ohm either.. damn, I'm really diggin my AudioSource amp now hearing how well it drives a 4 ohm load and isn't really made to do that with..

one version: http://www.jblpro.com/catalog/general/product.aspx?PId=77&MId=1

another: http://www.jblpro.com/catalog/support/getfile.aspx?docid=634&doctype=3

Note that these are later revisions and do not use the same woofer as Simi's.

I actually run a pair of those 2035's in my VOT's, wish i could find more as they have some "special" qualities.

Thank you both for the info.

Put your meter on them to be sure.

If the original purchaser ordered them, they could have ordered 16 ohm drivers.

They are 2225H and from everything I've read says H is 8 ohm, (J = 16) so figure half that in parallel... I like your idea better though to be positive..

EDIT.. Yeah, 4 ohm.. need to get them on a proper amp..

I was thinking you had some recones in there which can present other possibilities. Remember, they don't change the label when they re-cone with a different impedance kit.:D

Good reconers usually make note of it somehow, but it's not a universal practice.

Tis better to measure and be sure than "wank" and wonder.:D

LOL. yep, I'm sure now..

I've only looked at the one driver, but I compared the front of the cone to the others, and they all look so close I would guess they are all recones, but can't be positive. I can tell they have all been pulled, and that's why the repaint around the openings I am guessing. The over spray was under the driver I pulled..

It did have the gasket though, so appears to be a professional job other than the lack of paint matching skills. I'll be fixing that..

and they all look so close I would guess they are all recones,
FWIW, proper recones are not at all a bad thing. Good sound contractors will recone/replace drivers on a schedule in applications where continuous or hard use is the norm. A theater typically puts a LOT more hours on sound equipment than a touring sound company before it's replaced, and some theaters run em pretty hard.

Just realized how good the JBL 4410s can sound. Using a new Inter-M R150 reference plus amp and they really sing.

Hey Bart, that L300 x4 was a nice setup. :thmbsp:
Did you keep the 2nd pair?
Time to resurrect this thread - anybody got any new JBL pics they wish to share?
Nice thread indeed. Yup, several.. for example, below are the bargain 4311’s I've got last summer. Just had to find new midranges, 2105’s in there now, and they deserve a repaint. Have had 4312’s L/R before, and still have 4310’s w/ walnut veneer also waiting for a slight cabinet overhaul this winter – I just can't resist to white woofers. ;)

In 2010 I've also married some JBL drivers with Altec 879A cabinets, and I think it was Bowtie who 'baptized' them Santana 030's, over on the Altec board. Very detailed and lively sound :music:

My favorites in the living room remain the 4343’s though.
