fisher 500c for garrard 301, worth it??

Which one does she have? The lesser models have been going up in value as well, although I'm not sure why...

I will find out in March when I see her. It's definitely one of the low-end ones.

Keep the TT! It's both rarer and costlier than the receiver. Sell off all the excess receivers that don't see use, pool the money and at least fix up the TT, and if there is enough left over, get another Fisher so you have both!

thats a good point! well i did my homework, and the #1 thing that always keeps me from selling something is the fear that ill never be able to find another one. 500c is a damn nice receiver, and ive ALWAYS wanted one, and his is supposed to be absolutly pristine and with a recent tune-up. but i have to face reality, a fisher 500c is common as dirt. ive never found one locally on the street, but they are all over ebay still. the 301 isnt.

btw, the tonearm on the 301 is made by olson. so is the headshell. and it tracks at about 50 pounds lol.

I just happened to notice in Stereophile (Feb 2011) that Art Dudley has started a "Restoring a Garrard 301" thing like they did with the Thorens 124 some years ago.

If you held on, the value of your Garrard just went up.

There is not a Fisher amp on this planet that would tempt me into trading my grease bearing 301 - after a gentle restoration of my otherwise mint 301 and a 40 kgs birch ply plinth it has managed to rule out all other turntables - including another classic the td 124

If you 301 is far from optical mint your are not bound by legacy to keep the gray colour or cream if its a schedule 2 - you can have it custom painted to look great with any kind of veneer - and wit a great tone arm - I use an old school SME 3012 - but even modern arms will look great and probably provided you pick from the best shelves - leave you with an outstanding turntable

In other words - keep the Garrard
