Gear on the floor

I have seen many photos of gear, often high end, placed on the floor. I guess it is usually amps but not necessarily.

Is there any real reason or this?

Makes it easier for the cats to get on, especially fat cats, for the Cats On Audio Gear thread?

Those amps are usually quite heavy, so it's easier to leave them down low rather than lifting them up, and anything you might set them on would need to be rather sturdy as well.

should be cooler on the floor unless you have underfloor heating .. may get a bit dusty though ..another reason is it cant fall off the floor and damage it

The reason is to keep audio repair technicians in business. Seriously -- if you put your gear on the floor, it's essentially guaranteed that somebody, sooner or later, will step on it. And that somebody will probably be you.

Excellent question and I've wondered the same thing myself. I can't see any good reason for gear to be on the floor. It exposes it to dirt and dust from the floor, the possibility of it getting kicked or stepped on, and in the case of basements it leaves it vulnerable to getting wet (maybe even submerged) in the case of a plumbing leak.

Yes some pieces are heavy but even with those I don't think it would be a huge challenge to get them up off the floor a bit. Even 6" -10" inches off the floor would help protect it from the above mentioned items. And the likelyhood of it 'toppling' would be low.

I've never really understood it either. I've never done it. Perhaps there's some sort of voodoo in play...

For me the -really- funny part is that they will leave $5k to $10k of amps down on the floor, but they'll put the speaker wires on risers....:dunno::lmao:

Laziness? Or maybe all the money got spent on the amps leaving nothing for rack money? I dunno and I don't get it either. I do know though it'll be a cold frosty day downstairs when any of my amps get placed for duty on the floor.

I assure you all that there's no conspiracy at work. Personally, my Levinson sits on the floor (on an amp stand) because I can't lift it. It weighs as much as I do, almost, at over 125lbs. So it's never far off of the floor. Also a lot of mono blocks are close to speakers to keep speaker wires short. Why put just one component, by itself, on a high stand? Also (part II), many speakers image better without a lot if vertical obstructions between them. Also (part III) some people just think it looks neat.

+1 John. And as far as stubbing toes, stumbling over them or whatever, the only reason I ever get that close to my amps is to turn them on or off. And personally....yeah, I think they look cool.

:lmao: The dry humor in this thread is just fantastic. Wait until the rest of the guys with the amps on the floor discover this! :lmao:

If you don't place your turntable on a wall rack then where is the best place for it, high on a rack or near the floor and why? Same reasoning applies.

Ok, so if you think that's funny....what about the question, "Why on earth would the best solution to good sound be to cram the preamp, amp and tuner in one giant box with the signal path interrupted as many times as possible to allow for as many buttons and knobs?". Let the humor ensue.....:)

Just shootin' back....

Wow that solution pretty much follows the same lines as placing your gear on the floor where you can stub your sore toe on it.

Well, leavin' stuff on the floor makes it easier for the Dogs in yr life to "Mark" it.. And the Infants to go over & start rippin' out all those kewl wires 'n' things...
