What's with amps on the floor?

I keep seeing pictures of people's gear, and a lot of the higher end stuff, mac's in particular, seem to be placed on the floor, or very near it.

What gives?

The amps in my main system are four monoblocks that weigh just a hair under 100lbs each. I have them on the floor on 4" thick slate risers sitting on top of 4 hockey pucks each. If you would like to build me a shelf and put them up on there--feel free to come on over, but most folks don't find Krells all that "aesthetically pleasing" anyways--no big sexy meters or wood cases--just thick "industrial" aluminum faceplates and handles and a ton of razor-sharp heatsinks. I do have the Lexan tops for them, so you can peer inside from above

I like the way a castle is built out of all the gear, completely blocking access to the turntable on the stand behind the fortifications. Other candidate for what were they thinking is the entire rig down on the ground level, turntable maybe a foot off the floor. People use stuff set up like that?

Now let's pile all that crap between the speakers to make sure any good vibrations from the front wall are blocked and prevented from reaching the listening positions.

Lots of good thoughtlessness going into those castles of gear betweent the speakers.

Well, for some the reason(s) is/are obvious. As Joe said, I prefer short speaker (and power) cables and place the amps behind my speakers. What advantage would there be locating mine up any higher? The short stands allow for vacuuming underneath them. :)

I picked one of these up a couple of years ago. Makes getting heavy stuff in and out of the truck or on/off the work bench much easier (no more asking the wife for help) and safer. And it is really nice to have the adjustable height when working on rather large speaker cabinets or similar projects. I should have done it years ago.

Obviously the amps are near the floor to make it easier for the cat to find a warm place to nap.

Some prefer long IC's and short speaker cables. When amplifiers are on low stands behind/adjacent to the speakers you can use short speaker cables.

I assume this would be good when using balanced IC's but if using unbalanced it would be the opposite.
