Goodwill/SA/Thrift Store Discussions & Finds

9 years ago there were mirages in the thrift that were so large that they could not stand up right. They sat for two weeks before somebody bought them. Tall and narrow, heavy........

Great sounding speakers. Pricey in their day as well.
 
they sat because you would not be able to move them without a decent size truck. They had surprisingly not that great of value at the time.
This was before the market madness of today so :dunno:. I would have had no place to put them, and for what they were asking about $400 for the pair a flip was marginal at that time. It may have been 2012.......... I will stick with my little Totem Mani 2's.......

Guess I'm a sucker for those big floor standers :) My W70e's clock in at around 55lbs. The mirage speaker I auditioned had such clean sound and really great stage presence. You could hear where the musicians were positioned. My W70e's although not quite as good are remarkable. These were early 70's models and Wharfedale put more engineering into these models. I have a pair of KLH model 23's (next step down from 5's), and they sound like they have a cold next to the W70e's. Interestingly the model 23's are pretty flat when you do a frequency sweep, but they just don't bring any thrill to a live performance.
 
The KLH 23s are a little muted normally, I guess that's fair. Once you get used to them they're pretty wonderful though.

The Dual 504 took some work to get working properly again (new cables, belt, cart, and some work on the pitch control). But it's playing great now. The Tascams both worked right out of the box. The Pioneer S-710 speaker's cabinets are super ugly. Someone covered the vinyl with black paint. Didn't bother me for the price ($200 including shipping to my door). Considering all the drivers are perfect and they sound outstanding I'm not going to complain about how they look. I have black walnut veneer sheets on order for them already.

I paired all that gear up with a Hafler DH-110 preamp, DH-160 eq, DH-330 tuner, and DH-200 amp (all eBay and Reverb finds) to build my current system. I'm still working on the walnut cabinet for the rack, but the system has been running smoothly for the past few weeks in testing since I finished the last few major repairs . I'm still waiting on a parts DH-110 to pretty mine up a bit. Oh, almost forgot...I won a lot of 9 Rolling Stones albums on ShopGoodwill a couple weeks ago for $40 too :banana:

I'm almost ashamed to post this. Estate sale this morning, kinda out in the boonies, hardly anyone there, yard sale prices. Won't have time to test everything out until later this weekend or next week, but everything looks in good shape.

Came away with:
A bunch of mint record albums, 1$ each
Niles SVL-6 speaker selector
TEAC X-7RMKII reel to reel (lights up and motor controls all work)
Harmon Kardon ST8 with Audio-Technica AT155LC cartridge
Pair of Vandesteen 2CE's with original stands (dusty, but overall nice condition, can't find any marks on the cabinets or cloth)
