Goodwill/SA/Thrift Store Discussions & Finds

Just had another decent score: Technics by Pioneer SA-400 integrated amp/receiver. $5.99 at Goodwill. Sounds great. It is now my 8 year old's stereo, with my Marantz speakers and his iPod Nano. Sounds great. He loves it. $20 all in, less the iPod of course :)

Pioneer ? panasonic maybe :D

I picked up a 2GB iPod Shuffle at my local GW for $30 yesterday, in like-new condition. That's half of what the online Apple store wants for a refurbished example, and it will be perfect for gym duty.

Harman/Kardon 330B

Over the weekend I was at only one garage sale, as I started out late, and I was out of time.

Walked in the door and I eyed a vintage receiver, small, but I was unsure of the make and model, but the area was crowded with people looking at books near where it was.

It was playing an FM station through only one speaker.

I scoped out the house hoping that the "book" people would move away so I could get a better look. When they did, I looked at the CD player, in which I had absolutely no interest, and which was the same $20.00 asking price as the receiver.

I expressed alarm at the CD player's price, and I looked at the receiver, which was a 330B on decent cosmetic condition.

There was no sound coming from the right speaker, and I negotiated a $5.00 price to buy it in as is condition. My experience is that most vintage pieces are easily "fixed" with a little fiddling, cleaning and some lube. They agreed and I walked away a happy man.

At home, the R channel was out of wack, but a deoxit clean and lube seemed to work fine after I replaced a fuse which I blew with a little too much enthusiasm.

$5.00 . . . not bad at all.:D

Cheers

Its funny how my local GWs work. I'm pretty sure whoever is getting there before me (or else whoever decides what hits the sales floor) is ONLY going after the receivers and amps, or else is honed in on silver era stuff. I've been seeing plenty of 60's and 70's floor speakers, some decent brands but all tend to need some loving care, as well as lots of multidisc CD players and a few later model (always black) cassette decks.

Anyway, I've been hankering to get a cassette deck after years of being away from that format, on account of reading how much doggone FUN its seems like you tape guys have. Picked up a Technics RS-TR272 cassette deck in wonderful cosmetic shape at my local GW for $6. Not an elite deck by any means but a good starter deck to see if I want to do more than just play around with the format these days. I've always owned Technics decks since the 70's and they were all solid workhorses.

I picked up an 8 GB second generation iPod Nano at the local pawn today for $60. I gave my old one up to my 17 year old son, who had managed to destroy the screen on his.... the boy is hard on electronics. As you said, an iPod (or some portable music device) is MANDATORY for the gym.... the stuff fellow gym patrons plays tends towards either hip hop crap or golden oldies, and "Tie A Yellow Ribbon" is not motivational music!

sometimes it's still there when you go back!

I went into one of my local, thrift store this past Friday evening (not the wild life anymore) and spotted a pair of JBL Northridge (N28II) speakers. I knew nothing about this line from JBL, So at $50 I left them there. It was close enough to closing time that I thought that there was a good chance that they would still be there in the morning.

I went home and did some Internet research on them and found some good reviews.
The whole Northridge line has been updated to the series II which makes use of new driver construction. The woofers and midrange drivers are made from the most recent formulation of JBL’s PolyPlas™ polymer coated cellulose fiber. This material is intended to provide the sonic neutrality of paper with the added rigidity of the PolyPlas treatment. The combination is intended to give smooth frequency response, with faster transient response, and higher playback levels without distortion. These drivers also use JBL’s HeatScape™ motor structure, which improves heat dissipation for accurate performance even during high-volume playback... On and On

But there wasn't too much on them and the stuff I was finding was from 2003.

I went back in the morning with my two boys and they were still on the shelf. We put them in a cart and looked for something to test them with.

NOTHING!

Not one stereo, radio or TV with speaker outputs to be found.

So I took the AS-IS gamble and it paid off. These speakers are awesome!!! They only had some mild dings and scratches and the grills were in good shape too.

I'd buy these again if I came across them.

How does this stuff get tossed? Someone buys a new surround system and this becomes junk to them? Lucky Me!

Picked up an Admiral Model # GRD 67218A single CD player for $4.00 at the thrift today. One of the led's is out on the display & it's bpc but it sounds decent with several different CD's. Can use it on the sun porch or in the garage with one of my bpc amps or receivers. :music:

I spotted a pair of marantz imperial 5g speakers at GW saturday for $10. They had some rough looking, green homemade grills, so they didn't even look like speakers unless you looked hard enough. The drivers looked good, the woofers have newer looking rubber surround. I wasn't sure I wanted them, didn't know anything about them, so I gambled and left them and went home to look them up on the internet. I guess they are xxx rare :). I went back monday and they were still there, and they were now half off . I loaded them up fast and took em home. They sound great. Good $5 investment.

For that kind of money ($10) ......... I usually grab the stuff & worry about what it's really worth or what I'm going to do with it later. If I would have gone back to my thrift, it probably would have been gone. And you got 'em half off to boot.

Good score on the Marantz !

It's been a few months since I found anything worthwhile that wasn't broken so I was starting to think I was overdue....

Last night I picked up a pair of ADS L570's for $15 and a Fisher RS-1022 for $20, other than a missing FM antenna on the Fisher and some scratches on one of the speakers, these guys sound great!

The same thrift store that had I found the JBL's at last Friday had a pair of Infinity Qe this Friday. $15.00 they had blown fuses, that seem to be there to protect the EMIT tweeters. I temporarily jumped the fuses and the sound pretty darned good. I'm going to have to give some of this stuff to my kids soon, so that I can keep dragging more junk home!

Kenwood KD-2070 direct drive manual turntable

Found this turntable, the cover and hinges are still intact, bit scratch up.
No headshell, lost three of its feet, anti skate and balance weight long gone.
