Goodwill/SA/Thrift Store Discussions & Finds

Picked up a pair of B&W DM1800 speakers for $15 last week. They were speckled with hundreds of dots of multicolored paint like they had been sitting in a Jackson Pollack wannabee's studio. After cleaning the paint dots off the wood looks great and more importantly they sound fantastic. Also grabbed a working early RS STA-47 receiver (with "Quatravox") for $2. Both from SA. There's still a pair of Infinity RS-9s sitting there for $20. Almost perfect condition. Are they worthwhile?

I AM NOT A PHOTOGRAPHER! OK thats out of the way. these are pics of my Sherwood s9910...$17.50
Kenwood KD 5033...$25
Paul Simon Graceland...$1
being a cheap-ass?... PRICELESS
Actually there is something so completely satisfying about finding a hidden gem!

RD

Wow, nice looking Kenwood

Hey,
I've been really lucky so far. I'm guessing the market isn't as saturated with buyers up here in Canada, but then again there are some things we just never see....For example, I've never heard of anyone I know finding any Marantz tube gear, ever!
Anyhow, I can't complain about some of the stuff I've come across, such as:
*Empire 698 turntable, $10 at a yard sale, mint.
*Marantz 4300 receiver with wood case, and ElectroVoice Leyton speakers, free at a yard sale...not in the best shape, but hey, the price was right!
*Oracle Delphi turntable with Rega RB300 arm, $70 at a yard sale.
*Pioneer SM-83 integrated tube amp, $5 at a thrift store, working fine.
*Thorens TD-166MkII turntable with Grado cart, $20 at a thrift store, mint.
*Technics SL-1200MkII turntable with Shure cart, $6 at a thrift store, working great.
Another friend of mine who's also a collector has found some of the best deals I've ever heard of, for example...
*Linn LP12 turntable with Ittok LVII arm and Karma cart, $50 at sally ann, mint.
*Rega Planar 3 turntable, $15 at sally ann.
He also once walked past a console at a thrift, thinking he might look at it on his way out. Finding nothing else in the store, he went to leave, and passed the guy who had bought the console in the meantime at the cash...he was joking with the cashier about the reason for the unit's immense weight: a full McIntosh tube system with preamp, tuner, and two mono blocks!

any pics of all these amazing finds??????????????????????????????????????????/////////

Hadn't been on my rounds for a few weeks. Hit 3 Good Wills, a Saint Vincent De Paul and a recycle place:

Techinics TT SL-B200 - $3.99
Pioneer CT-M55R - $5.00 (plays 6 cassetts!)
Kenwood KM-991 - $3.99
Technics SU-V707 - $24.99
Yamaha R-700 - $12.99
Sansui 1000X - $23.99
Heathkit AR-29 - $20.00
vector research VRX-9000 - $3.99

Not bad for 3 hours work. :)

What the hell is going on up there! That s unbeleivable are people out there that rich that they can just give gear like that away.Even on the GW website all the nicest stuff comes from the Wash, Oregon area,It would take me a year to find that much stuff around here.

The area that I shop in is near McChord Air Force Base, Fort Lewis, and some rich neighborhoods (Lakewood = Dr's and Lawyers). And then there is Boeing not too far away.
I think all that equals opportunity. Throw in some dumb luck, and any day can be a good day.
Now, having said all that, I've had days when I've gone out, and came back empty handed. :)

I hit the jackpot several months ago. My brother has a business that provides clean-out services. Many home owners and realtors use his business to clean out houses prior to listing them for sale. He was cleaning out a house that was for sale as a result of a divorce. He called me because he came upon two vacuum tube amplifiers and knew that I might be interested. Then he told me that the name on the amps was Conrad Johnson.

I went to the house he was cleaning out and discovered that he had come across two pristine Conrad Johnson Premier Twelve amplifiers. We contacted the realtor my brother was working for and told him of the find. The realtor stated we should abide by the clean -out contract which says that anything removed from the house by the clean-out contractor is the property of the contractor.

I became the owner of two very nice CJ12s that cost me the price of gas to get to the clean-out house and lunch for my brother.

Just picked up a great pair of Marantz 900's for $8 got them home and they sound as good or better than most of what I have. Man the woofers travel in and out a LOOOOOONG way. Love them and the monster wire I got with them as a free throw in was worth the $8. Great vineer on these cool pattern.

Picked up a Sony Turntable in very good shape this morning at Goodwill. My two year old son and I had a great time cleaning it up. I put a new cartridge on it and it sounds good. It will hold me over until I can get a Thorens. :D

Found this yesterday at AmVets for $39.93. Works perfectly.

The proprietary caps in CJ gear of a certain age deteriorate because of defective mfgring and need to be replaced to restore proper performance. Call CJ to find out if that applies to your amps.
P.S., I hate you!:D

Harmon Kardon

I like my Citation 23 tuner. It was a nice find for 20 dollars. After a little upgrading it sounds as nice as most of my tuners. Came here FedEx on Christmas eve.
