Grado Hum Database

Telefunken S300D with Grado Green. Very little hum, only audible when cranking volume past listenable levels, probably due to phono preamp.
 
As many know, Thorens 125MKII, SME 3009 II improved, Joseph Grado Silver, Cardis arm wireing with SME plugs.

No hum, guess I'm lucky, Grado's are hummers if the set up isn't right, does that make him a genius or a flake? I'll go with genius, he was hand winding coils in his brooklyn apt he shared with his mother and grandmother to make a scratch of a living and he had the passion:music:

Grado Green, VPI MKIII, old metal pully, clear belt, re-wired motor with Home Depot Extention cord, old PLC, audioquest PT-6, Nak ic's
soundvalves VTP-101 B&K ST-140, DIY Focal 2-way 5.5"W-cone & 90-tdx speakers
No Hum
I did have a hum that would go in and out as the palter turned but when I talced the belt it pretty much went away . Me thinks it was vibrational.
BTW the Grado is a 2006 Cart if that makes a difference

Tried a Grado M+ with new Prestige Gold stylus on my new Technics 1210. There is a hum, audible at about the 10 o'clock position on the volume dial. The hum dissipates as the tonearm moved toward the spindle. With any other cartridge on this table, no hum.
 
Grado Gold + Thorens TD-125 Mk II + ADC Alt-1 Arm= Hum.

Some times the hum goes away, but it is uasually there and changes as it moves toward the spindle.

BTW- a Shure V15xMR is dead silent on the same rig

Try a gentle twist of the R/L cart wire pairs. :yes:

In twisted pairs, or all together? It needs to be in twisted pairs, right pos and neg separate from left pos and neg.

Hmmmm, maybe the same deal for the wires inside the tone arm and/or out the bottom to the interconect?

Shielding on the motor? (Have to be careful on not overheating by blocking airflow)
 
Grado Prestige Green on Realistic Lab 400 = No hum here. Exellent sound!
This TT will hum with any cartridge if not grounded.
 
all the head shell wires are twisted together, I will untwist and regroup. I'll report back the results.

Making progress then. How about the wires on the underside between the RCA interconnects and where it goes into the tone arm?

You may wish to experiment by increasing or decreasing the number of twists in each pair of wires.....

FYI ,CAT5 network cables use relatively loose, and somewhat irregular twists... twisting the wires too tight may not be optimal.
