Has something recently changed on AK?

This is the point behind this thread. If your ads are chasing away your clientele, how is anyone benefiting? And if the only people who are staying are those who are blocking the ads, then how do the ads generate income? No one sees them except those who get frustrated and leave.

I get that advertising helps pay for the cost of the web site, but don't break your site to spite your nose...
 
Probably because the vast majority of users aren't complaining. I don't know why not, but probably because they're not perceiving problems. If the site traffic dropped a lot you'd expect something to change. Just thinking out loud, and I do sympathize with your problems.

One of the first things I did after starting to get replies to this thread was to install the latest supported version of Firefox. I don't see any ads anymore when running it and my performance is back where it used to be. But this solution isn't really acceptable for some of our older hand held devices. I suppose I will have to wait and see what happens.
 
AK became unusable for me in my "worst case" environment - Windows 10 with Explorer that I'm not at liberty to modify. Keystrokes and clicks getting very delayed or no response, tabs getting reloaded repeatedly. For a while during "the Sellwild era", being logged in was an improvement, but it's no longer enough to make AK usable.

I guess the main reason I'm bothering to report this, in the face of the strong headwind of denial that there's a problem, is to confirm that it is definitely and specifically Sellwild that is the cause of the problem (for my situation). I eventually arranged to get the Windows "hosts" file modified so that sellwild.com and the associated address ads.bidstreamserver.com are inaccessible. After that, AK immediately became usable again.

I believe it would be a service to the AK user community if the AK owners and @Advally could work out an agreement to exclude Sellwild.

Considering between two PCs and a smarphone, with no special measures for ad blocking or whatever, I seem to have none of the slowdowns some others report. Considering some report issues but it seems many more are not, Is that more indicative of problem for AK to fix or a problem on your end?

My smartphone is fairly new, Galaxy S9, but it's not the newest, and my PCs are older 4th gen i5s running W10, so it's not like I'm running any massive powerhouses.

I don't pretend to understand all the website/Internet stuff but I'm just not seeing any issues and I've not taken any extra measures. :dunno:
 
Again....the ad platform implemented is causing problems for some users. Can't understand how this keeps getting translated to "user error". Yes, for some users, there are some fixes. But the reason they need a "fix" in the first place is the platform.

At the end of the day, no platform is going to be compatible with 100% of the combination of devices, systems and browsers out there. AK knows this, but is comfortable with the trade off (some reduction in site usage/eyeballs in return for ad revenues). Makes perfect sense, assuming that they somehow keep track of the cost side of the equation.

Personally, I do not (and will not) buy a new smartphone every year or two. Mine is a bit over three years old, and it has issues (overheating, high battery usage, locking up, freezing, etc) ONLY on AK. But as I have stated elsewhere, for me there is an easy solution...access the site only via my desktop computer (W10 and Firefox, with Adblock Plus).

I don't suppose that the ranks of the affected and the ranks of the unaffected are ever going to see eye to eye, but something that the unaffected might consider is this: Why is the AK experience changing for the affected? What accounts for the title of this very thread?

Nothing about my (worst-case) environment or my usage changed, and yet AK went from being usable to being unusable. Then I blocked the source of the problem ads and AK became usable again. Should I and every other affected user really have to come up with individual fixes for "the problem on (our) end"?

I don't know whether AK staff is looking into it. But, as it stands today, I'd suggest "yes", you should take individual action.

Still though, I see Sellwild bottom of every page, yet it doesn't seem to affect any of my stuff. Why not me too if that's what it is?
 
No plms here -- firefox on Fedora Linux 32...have set FF to cleat history and cookies etc whenever it closes ... have noticed no issues with stuck browser etc... Clearing cache etc. always a good thing to start with...do not know about Safari/MAC

Because it is an interaction of the ad mechanism, platform, device, OS and browser.
 
So help me understand, on my desktop PC for example. When I have a default W10 installation and use the browser however it comes with the default W10 installation, using Intel processing architecture, just how different is that going to be from everyone else? If it was all that unique how could much of anything work?

I've been running Firefox on W10 since almost day 1 and have never seen a pop up or experienced slow down. For giggles, I ran Explorer and pulled up AK and saw popups and side windows. Definitely a different experience and a lot more going on which could be a source of the slow down.

Not everyone has that configuration. Think about different versions and releases of OS, different devices, different browsers, etc etc.

Certainly not everyone, but I'd have to think a basic W10 installation on basic Intel architecture is pretty f-in' common.

Less reading of AK on mobile devices and ad blockers on my desktop for me. As a UK resident, I’m not likely to buy a used car in the US anyway.
