Heathkit W6 testing and issues

yeah that is very nearly a Mark II, just cap-coupled vs direct coupled at the driver stage.
In some Dyna literature from the early days it says that its "similar to" a Williamson. I don't really think so but it was the hifi amp standard of the time so I understand why they made the comparison. Basically Dyna was competing with the likes of Heathkit, so its a bit funny to see a Heathkit W series amp using a circuit that looks pretty much like what Dynaco was selling years earlier.

Back in the day, the Dynaco/Laurent circuit was billed as a Williamson “type” circuit — to distinguish it from being a true Williamson circuit, but also to keep the link between it and its Williamson origins in place.

I don't think many would consider the W-7M or its output iron in the same league as the W-6M.
The iron on the W6's seems much heftier similar to the W5, but a tad larger
Well maybe the W7 might have an advantaged being it's a mono block so it won't share its power transformer with another channel.
Both are Peerless and both are excellent, but the W-6M opt is exceptional, in John Atkinson's well-published tests the only other transformer close was the Citation II, and that included most of the well-respected high end iron of the heyday.
I plugged it into my system and played it for a bit, everything seemed to work as designed other than the damping pot, it made loud noises. Could just be dirty pot, as I have no background on these two. Picked them up off that auction that is on the banners here at AK.
It looks like a bypass cap but not sure what that would have to do with a mod but perhaps it's increasing the value of a coupling cap as part of a mod? Normally bypass caps are small value and don't appreciably change the value of the existing one.
possibly just bypassing for potentially improved HF performance. Electrolytics aren't amazing at very high frequencies so a film cap is sometimes strapped across it to take care of it.
