help me decide - big loud speakers

If you had to choose big CV D series speakers (d5, d7, d9) or a pair of Mach Threes, all other things being equal, to play nice and loud, which ones do you choose? Anyone owned both?

Of those choices, I'd be inclined to go with the CV's.

D9's. My friend had a pair of Mach 3's and they thumped good but really lacked top end

I've owned all three pairs of CVs and a pair of Mach Ones. D7s for sure. D9 bass gets a bit flabby at volume where the D7 woofers remain controlled. The D7s also reach a little lower (25 hz) compared to the D9s 29 hz.

Like Madtech, I have owned the C-V D7 & D9. Also have had Macch Ones, Klipsch 4.2 and Marantz HD 880. I kept the Marantz as my rock set.

The 15" D9's for sure. I have a pair of S2's and 2000-15's; both armed with 15" woofers and walnut veneer. They play everything from Brubeck/Davis/Coltrane to Testament/Pantera/Slayer with ease and clarity, and with chest pounding power when needed!

What sort of amplification would you be using? For the music you mentioned (especially allmans, stones, dead, Neil Young), you really-want a smooth, non-fatiguing speaker with great mids. You want bass of course, and you want enough volume for your situation, but you also want complexity, coherency, finesse, dynamics, and a great soundstage, and there are better ways you can go IMO that also won't break the bank. But it depends on what you'll be using for an amp (or receiver). Also, how big is the room?

I listen to all the stuff you mentioned, and my speakers make it sound great, although it doesn't sound like the speakers I use are the sort of thing you're looking for here, but you still might want to look for a listen-all-day type of speaker. KLH Fives would do nicely for that stuff, and you might like some of the bigger ADS models (I'm speaking of vintage speakers here). I don't really know though. It all depends on what kind of power you're working with (what kind and how many watts) as well as what size room you have. Lots of ways you can go.

CV D9's are a known quantity and probably still a good value! The do play louder and deeper than the RS. The RS has, perhaps, the advantage of the upper horn spacial coverage. It would be one of those things I would A/B to be sure........

I just sold my d9's, too big for my room! Hard to place them right in a small room, since there rear ported you need to keep them away from the wall. Now if you have a room like in a basement where you can get back away from them they would be great. They would blow away my Mach ones in the bass department, but both would hurt my ears with harsh mids and highs. I moved on from listening loud these days but still like to crank it up every now and then. I do regret selling my d9's but just didn't have the room and i didn't get a chance to set them outside and throw a party with them, thats where they would shine!

Or you could go with something for small stadium, these Sunn Model 15s get loud. You can run them with anything from a 10 watt receiver to 3 800 watt power amps. Generally speaking, you can pick them up for very little and can take a beating from all your buddies and spilled cool refreshing beverages.

If anyone wants to suggest alternatives I am open. Im looking for a loud, big sound. I would prefer not to use a subwoofer, which is why I was targeting big CV type speakers.

Definitely looking for something inexpensive.





I will be powering the speakers with one of the following:
- Yamaha (brand new) 7.1 receiver. Pretty sure it is 90w per channel, discrete.
- Silver Pioneer SX-650
- Late 80's Kenwood receiver. Dont laugh. Had this since I bought it new in 8th grade. 2x85 watts. I've kept it all these years because it sounds great and is very powerful

My main listening speakers at the moment, for music, are Boston HD8's. (8 inch woofer, dome tweeter, suspension/sealed cabs)
I really really like these speakers. They sound great and they play quite loud - but I need a bit more. Something bigger and more efficient.

The room is medium sized with a vaulted ceiling. Acoustics arent great but nothing I can do about that. Lots of hard surfaces.

Parts Express sells the RTR EV15's which are a higher end version of their 1530. They are 95 db and 400 for a pair.
