HH Scott Owners Thread

Got a bunch-o-Scott tube gear, several of which have been brought back to spec by Dave451, and in one case (272) with great difficulty due to horrific prior owner mods. My list (contact me if you are interested in any as I'm in the process of rehoming gear--but keeping several for the rotation). Most are in unrestored condition, many are fully working, some completely restored.
<snip>
Receivers: 340, 340B, 345, 380, 399 (2)

Oh man, that 380 would be tempting... no, I never listen to AM radio, but still... (I am almost done shaking down my 340B, I'll come back and post pics later. Only Scott piece I have but it sounds great.)

I'd love to know how he replaced the caps in the MPX box. Looks like the box may need to be completely removed from the unit to get access inside. My 340B is the same version.

Probably well known fact on this thread, if ever you question the quality of your HH Scott FM receiver:

in the early 60’s there were three companies bidding with the fcc to standardize FM and Dr. Scott’s company won the patent. Or something like that :D

The FM broadcast standard that won out over Armstrong's (he was cheated out of it) came about before 1940. The multiplex standard became law in 1961. Had nothing to do with Scott. Was Zenith and GE.
Scott simply was one of the first to market a stereo tuner ( Model 350) to work the new standard.

For those who have Scotts that use EL84/7189 output tubes: What are you using? The Sovtek EL84Ms in my 299A are at the end stage of life.

I'm using EL84M's in my two 222C's and my 299A (second ed.). The original 7189's are stored away for special occasions.

Your post reminded me I wanted to look up something on Jim McShane's web site and while I was there I looked up 7189s, it seems that the Sovteks might still be the go to. He seems to like at least some of the Sovteks; he sold me a pair of Sovtek 12AX7LPS for my 340B's phono stage too.

Actually I discovered only 1 of my EL84Ms was bad, so I'll likely just get a replacement. I'd sure love to spring for some original 7189s someday. Epay has them on ocassion, but it's so expensive and risky.

All that RF and SS stuff scares the hell out of me........... But, it's certainly a nice looking thing on the outside! I had a couple of SS Scott units, and as I recall, they sounded pretty nice. Clearly SS units do have an advantage in terms of 'power to weight' ratio!!!

I've never been a huge fan of SS or working on SS stuff. However, a month or so ago the cheap little Dayton amp I had in my workshop kicked the bucket, when a cutoff disk shattered, flew into it and knocked it off the shelf it resided on. Put a nice gash in it. Not wanting to put a piece of good tube equipment in a place where it could be easily damaged I turned to CL and found my first "vintage" SS receiver for $50. A Lafayette LR-3500 which was supposed to be their totl receiver in the mid-70s to compete with Marantz and Sansui. It's about 40wpc I think and sounds pretty decent. Was fairly impressed. Still prefer analog audio to transistor, but it seems to be a nice well built unit. A look inside revealed a pretty robust transformer and caps that are still in decent shape. Well laid out etc. I have a blue tooth receiver hooked up to it to stream from the internet.

I have a set of alignment tools, but rarely listen to the radio so eventually I'll get around to realigning my Scotts, but it hasn't been too critical to me. Not my favorite thing in the world to do.

Anyways, sorry to go on a tangent about a non-Scott piece of equipment, but I understand where you're coming from. Like anything else there's some advantages and disadvantages to both transistor and tube stuff. Nice looking receiver @NH-MAN! Enjoy!

Just got my 340B back from my electrician friend. Completely overhauled and ready for another decade or more. I had already done the electrolytics. He replaced all the filter caps, rebuilt the FM multiplex box! Aligned the FM mono and stereo, fixed the stereo meter. He replaced all the B+ cans and stuffed them (real clean job with aluminum tape). Set bias (-20V)

I’m real pumped! Going to connect to my Whafedale W70C’s tonight!
Looks fantastic! Great job done on it. Hopefully you're enjoying it! My 340b sang after I was finally able to restore it. I think they can go head to head with a 500c any day of the week. Great sounding receivers and still a bit of an underrated sleeper!

Meh I think you're ok. Not sure if there's an SS Scott thread. I found value in it anyway. I guess the mods or OP have to make a decision on that one.
