Can a laser cutting process be considered "pure analog"?
Does sound interesting, but they did state there would be a special HD turntable to maximize the effect. I'd like to see how much you lose if you just use your current TT. I also would like to know if I will be able to have cataracts removed while I was listening to one of the HD LPs.

well, it sounds to good to be true BUT maybe not. data need not be digitized prior to laser cutting. this COULD be a major leap in tech. only time will tell,when the time comes that the product meets the reviewers.

Why not? An analog signal sent through a laser is still analog.
Analog? Digital? Who cares, as long at it sounds good?

Well thats the thing. The article stated that it is "reverse compatible", however it also said a new TT (and cartridge? didn't mention that) would be needed to take full advantage of the tech. Then it muddied the waters further when talking about the environment, the time it takes to manufacture LP's and other things not related to sound quality. I wonder if this is going to be like the new MQA digital codec where it also is reverse compatible BUT in order to read the hi rez you will need a new DAC which can read the new format. What I'm wondering is this going to be more of the format wars, and will we be forced to gamble with what we think is the winning horse or else sit on the sidelines.. The reverse compatibility is nice but I am always suspicious of those companies that want to sell me another piece of equipment in order to finally reach some sort of perfect sonic nirvana.
I had this exact same conversation on facebook earlier. This is what I wrote.

Ummm, Didn't they say the same tired **** about CD's and look where they are now. Records been around for a long time, and ain't going no where. Oh an 30% louder, What is that about ? That's what caused most of the problems with CD to begin with.

I interpreted volume to mean more music can fit on an LP but maybe it simply means louder.. Hope not!
