$$$$$, same reason for just about anything.
It worked in the oil scam back when we went north of $4/gallon.
But that seems too complicated and tricky for old Marantz gear.
Maybe its an insurance scam, CC scam, or something I haven't thought of yet.
All kinds of crazy crooked crap in the world now.
It seems that its everywhere, people just sit and think up new crap.
But, I have also seen it where someone willing to ship worldwide will hit big bucks overseas. A lot of sellers won't hassle with the paperwork or got stung so they only sell local. I made some crazy money because I would ship things anywhere.

Lots of possibilities, and unless someone here admits to being or knowing the seller or the buyer, we'll probably never know for sure.
I wouldn't mind seeing the prices for these fine old Marantz receivers going that direction, though... since I still have a number of them to sell, and eBay prices have little effect on the prices where I would buy them. If this starts turning into a trend, and not just an aberration, I might sit on them a bit longer and then sell them off slowly, one by one, after full restoration and careful description. Hmmmmm....

[If it had had the wooden case, I would have bought it just to get another one of those... but not for the receiver, since I still have two of those.] Maybe I should go back tomorrow and get it, just in case? I'm sure the price would be no more than about $100 (or even less), and if a 2270 is worth over a thousand, there has to be a little "spread" in there somewhere!
What Bihagstrom said about shipping overseas is true: you expand your market enormously when you ship worldwide, especially in the current economic conditions, were most of Asia has already rebounded and is nearly booming, but America is still struggling. There are plenty of well-heeled collectors in Europe and even more in Asia who are eager to buy vintage American audio gear. I get asked REPEATEDLY here about sourcing this kind of stuff, both by individuals and by dealers would buy by the pallet-load or container-load, if there was supply. But when I go on eBay, I find many, many of my countrymen unwilling to fill out an extra paper (or whatever their reason is) to ship overseas. If it is fear of being scammed, there are just as many domestic scamsters as overseas ones, and way more legitimate overseas buyers than overseas scamsters. I could understand not selling to notorious locations like Nigeria, but to exclude markets like Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Germany, the UK, Hong Kong, etc... is being either very lazy or a bit :screwy:, and costs those sellers in lost revenue!
