How can a turntable influence the sound quality?

If you decide to get a table...may the lord have mercy on you as you filter through the different design philosophies of the plinth/arm/platter/drive system!
I don't really mind what kind of turntable I would get I just didn't understand this and now I do that's all I'd love to try out multiple tables

Well I am glad you got something from the responses.

There is a lot of truth in, "We don't know, what we don't know." The trouble comes in when we decide because we don't know it, there is nothing to know. Sometimes questions are perceived as a challenge to something when there are really just an attempt to be informed.

wait till you get to understanding different cartridge types, MM vs MC vs MI vs IM etc etc etc and then!!!! the phono stages, and SUT's vs Head amps !! Good God there is so much to learn!!!

Thats why I love this hobby and these from members , what I learn every day here just amazes me.

Objectively (with a decent understanding of mechanics) I look at a turntable and think all it should do are 3 things:

- spin the record at an accurate and unwavering 33.3rpm (or 45rpm if you actually own any)
- allow the stylus to be perfectly aligned with the groove in the record with no other force being exerted
- cancel outside vibrations/forces so they don't get to the stylus as mentioned above
- it's the cartridge that actually generates the electrical signal which is then amplified, sent to the speakers and results in sound.

Subjectively, I've had a bunch and they vary substantially in how well they do accomplish those tasks. I like the heavy ones with direct drive motors, auto lift (at least) and nice aesthetics. Pretty lights help too.

I guess this tread can be closed now thanks to everyone for your replies. Not sure if I need t

not sure what you mean. I am not a troll it might same obvious to you but I actually didn't understand I understand it way better now so I am glad I made this tread. I am new to turntables and vintage audio in general so I don't know a lot about turntables .
But do you know how to answer a question? Usually people who are looking for help answer the questions that are asked to give the people asking the questions a better idea so they can possibly help the OP . You were asked that question twice and it was never answered. You had another chance to answer it and you didn’t , therefore this whole thread is suspect imo . Not a good way to start out on AK of your genuinely wanting your questions answered.

Don't know what you mean exactly. Also not sure what the problem is if you want me to answer a question you can ask me. As for as I know I replied to almost everyone but I might have missed some here and there

Yes the pattern I see here seems the be that basically the only difference there should/could be is rumble background noise and stability right ? if so how come that people (including audiophiles) claim that some turntables for example have more bass than others ? (btw please correct me if I misunderstood what you meant)

Miss interpretation.....

Not more bass....more soundstage. The ability to hear more detailed tones....depending on your hearing.

You should really stop referring to other people’s experiences and have some of your own !!

I may be wrong, but I don't see this OP as trolling. I know that the concept of how a table affects sound can be confusing at best....even with some exposure.

Seems to be the case sadly I have almost 0 experience of my own and with the amount of people I saw that were saying similar things I doubted that they were all lying or just wrong. So I wanted to better my understanding of what they meant.

Whats your location? Maybe a local forum member would let you listen to their system. I'd be happy to if your near by.

Ahhh, I have a friend who lives there that into CRT projectors.

I think he has a few TT's as well. He's anti digital for the most part ;)

There are some serious heavyweights here in regard to turntables. From guys that have paid the cost and tried pretty much every table you can imagine, to people that are recording industry insiders that know what stuff is SUPPOSED to sound like based on mixing in recording studios.

I've learned bunches of stuff here from people that asked nothing from me beyond possibly an unspoken desire that I contribute what I can, when I can, in terms of knowledge or experience.

This kind of information used to get shared little bits at a time in person if you were lucky enough to know the right people.

Sometimes, you just need to start somewhere (get a turntable) and run with it.

I live in Europe The Netherlands I doubt many people on here are from around here

You still have record stores there? I remember some good ones in Amsterdam several years back. Ask the owner if they ever get any tables, Surely somebody has tried to drop one off at some point.

That's the plan. Can't hurt to know more about certain things though.

I remember seeing some record stores around where I live never went inside though doesn't seem like a bad idea
