I count mine. I have a detailed excel spreadsheet of every cd I own saved to disc in case of fire damage.

Updated frequently and kept in a fire proof safe.

Anybody with extensive catalogs should be doing this. I hope you are.

About 180 CDs, fewer vinyl LP's. That is slowly changing, as I am currently purchasing about 4 LP's to every CD, give or take a thrift shop or two. Finally having a TT/Amp/Speaker combo that reveals the warmth and detail of vinyl has decidedly skewed me toward vinyl as my preferred medium.

GREAT QUESTION! If I were to actually count them, I could find a storage solution that will end this system that looks like the "The Trouble With Tribbles". I'm thinking around 400. More than my cassette collection, but nowhere close to my vinyl.

4000? How do you keep track of what you have when you're buying new ones (when at a store)? I've got about 1000 and have only doubled up on 6 or 8, but I hestiate to buy sometimes and can miss a good find.

Seriously, you should know what you have. Document them. It is important.

Agreed, good idea to have a database if your cd collection is large. There are programs out there which do this, simply put the cd in your cd rom drive and the pgm does the rest, for example:

Damn if I didn't double up on Dylan's Live 1975 ($19). That prob would've paid for a program. Happens with the artists I have a lot of. 14 Dylan CD's & 8 LP's, for instance.

My count is at 23 and falling, as I replace my CDs with vinyl. But, I still have the few that I can't find / weren't released on vinyl, mostly including local or regional artists.

Though it really doesn't make a difference since I don't have a CD player anymore, anyway.

five that's coming from BMG, but they're not here yet so I can't count those.

Years ago before CD's I started a card catalog of my then LP only collection. It was extended to include cassettes and then CD's. I transferred this to my computer in the middle 80's using a database I wrote in VB for MS Access. I did this before CDDB and other apps came along. I have updated the database along the way and now run the latest version of MS Office Pro. Currently I have entries for >2500 LP's >1100 CD's and >150 cassettes with individual song listings etc:
This was done solely to keep track of what I have. I have no desire to transfer my collection to HDD.
