HPM-100 -vs- ADS L-810

Status
Not open for further replies.
Paired with a very fine 200 wpc Denon, my HPM-900 (an improved model) is solid and clean with the bass, and the mids and treble is great.
The ADS are fine speaker systems, but I don't believe they'll smoke the HPMs.
Remember that the L-810 sold for $900 a pair as opposed to $600 a pair for the HPM-100.

hey i've got a personal interest vested in the outcome of this contest. my pride.

actually i fully expect the HPM's to hold up to the 810's just fine, but i will let my ears make the final decision.

Nope, so I'm looking forward to the experience. That is, if I can sneak some good music past the Midnight Oil discography Dingus has lined up. :D
bonus points if you bring some bottled wallaby piss.

That's different. The AR-9s are just relatively power hungry. The Quantum 2s are very reactive with very low impedance dips. Your Adcom amp should be able to handle it just fine, but I don't know about those Luxmans. My main point, though, wasn't whether they'd do it, but that I don't want to risk destroying someone else's gear.
the Luxman R-117 will handle a 2ohm load, how well i dont know.

I have a suggestion for the sequel....AR9 vs Quantum 2. Problem is, neither are very mobility friendly. Would be a good comparitive evaluation I think. Both look to be in the same class.
i believe Army picked up a pair of Quantum 2's a while back that he likes better than his AR-90's.

What's up there Dingus, you australian or something? No offense meant.

I mean first the (Midnight oil) now "The bottled wallaby piss" What's next?
You got a kangaroo and a dingo in the back yard to? :D

Actually I like the (Midnight oil) I've heard as I have (diesel and dust) on disk and love the whole album!

The Quantum 2s, or rather the Watkins in the volume of cab, present a ~1.8 ohm load to the amplifier at and below driver resonance. Figure large current draw at this impedance and you'll see why I'm worried.

Nope, he picked up two pairs of these. (Subtle hint for someone here to grab 'em while the price is low.)

As to good music, I've got some that will stand your avatar's hair on end, it he had any hair. Maybe that drunk Russian folk CD of mine with the soprano guy singing? Nah, I'll go for some good Gypsy music. Nothing like tuba and drum to test speakers.

I've done a lot of shootouts/speaker testing here in the last year alone!

ADS L880 (and other smaller ADS)
KEF C40
Yamaha NS-A836
Minimus 7
EPI 200 and Twelve
Cerwin Vega D3
JBL L-50 and 2 newer pairs of JBL
HPM 60 and 100
Klipsch RB-35 AND RC-7's as mains
Quite a few home brew creations.
Several Advents.
ESS AMT-6 (way cool speaker)
DCM Timeframe 600
A small pair of infinities (don't know the number, have a poly cell tweeter and 8" woof)
Big pair of rock/party Fisher 3-ways with a big ol 15" woofer out on the back patio.
Diatone DS-181S
Wharfedale W60E

There's probably more I'm forgetting plus plenty in the past and still stacked around here.

(I'm sure there are others to but these are the ones I really want as of now and are somewhat obtainable)
Ones I'd like to get/test/hear are. Mostly, mainly because of AK and it's members. No particular order.

AR 9's
Dynaco A25,A35
Roger's LS3/5A (or equivelant as there were many itturations of these)

no aussie here, just into the band in a real big way. the wallaby piss was an inside remark targeted at another AK'er, who i am suprised hasnt yet chimed in on the subject. do yourself a big favor and pick up another Oil's album, then another, and another, and another .....

I don't have much in the way of disposable cash, would you have a suggestion for 1 really good one?

Do they have anything on high rez!

anyone of them will do just fine, excellent through and through. as far as i know, the last album (Capricornia) did have a 5.1 version but everything else is either LP or plain CD.

AMT-6 and L880

dingus said:
how would you compare these to the L-880's?

The AMT is a giant speaker with dual 12" drivers and 4 heils uptop!
There realy isn't any comparison between the 2.

The Dual 12"s are xover'ed (if that's a word) at 700hz then the heils take over.

The heils are a panel type driver with a simular sound to a panel but the way there arranged in this speaker
they have a wider dispertion pattern and are extremely detailed but yet smooth and very fast sounding, the
dual 12"s in this sealed cabinet try there best to keep up and do a pretty good job.

These speakers go really low with a good droan to them but yet extend quite high also and that 700hz xover
frequency gives a great voice representation, they do extremly well on classical and things with nice strings
both low and high, great Jazz speaker. Not quite a pounding/rocking speaker per say but they can do it pretty
good, I would say they have more finesse then the ADS and the ADS can rock a little harder.

Overall the big AMT's are quite an impressive speaker. I'm going to refinish the cabinets and grills then need
to find 1 tweeter for each one as 6 of the 8 were good when I got them. (Ebay has them but I need funds)

There are some pic's on this thread.

Thanks for the tip!

I will have to double check which ones fit mine but if you look at this page mine are
the size of the ones for the concept ce-1,ce-2 #689-1108.

Do you know which ones yours would be.

But yah when I called ESS they had no idea what the AMT-6 was so had no parts
for them, I will have to try again and if they do I'll get 3 to have a spare.

Dingus I hope you don't mind the off topic conversation and if you do I will stop.

Cool, that's the same way I feel about any thread I start, if it goes off topic but it's amungst people I know then it's cool with me.
Thanks! What's your impression of those AMT-6's?

KFA888 did you happen to look at the page with the Diaphrams and notice which one was yours?
