Wow.

Hi Al.....Welcome....good to see ya.
Sorry 'bout your Klipsch fiasco.
I know what you mean.

So fellas'.... Are we all here as one happy bunch of audio guys, or what?
I hope so.

I'll tell ya....I spent several years at the Klipsch forum and i've experienced it's demise, first hand.
It wasn't pretty.
But given the nature of the venue and the assimilation of Klipsch by the unmentioned relative, I can understand why things have gone the way they went.
A man with a dream is one thing, his siblings' son with a business degree is another.
What ya gonna do?
It's progress, pure and simple.

At any rate, it's great to see some old friends posting here.
You guys' should stay for a while.
This place is very nice.
A little heavy on the the policing, but well worth the price of such endeavors.
Peaceful.....is the operative word.

At any rate, I just wanted to chime in to see if you gentlemen remembered who I was and to say Hello.

A quick question to all of you whom are following this thread.

What do you think of the K-5-J mid horn?

Regards,
John

P.S. Long live Kelly H.

Ha Ha just kidding......

welcome al,

I find myself spending more time here than on the klipschforums lately... I enjoy the wide spectrum of information and people! plus, NO MORE NOSVALVES!!

=)

Welcome Al,

I personaly think you produce an awesome product and one day I will get a pair for my La Scala's. For the time being BEC provided my with new caps and such and I rebuilt my AA's that way for now.

Anyway, I always looked forward to reading your post and responses. You are an excellent source for information on xover design and look forward to more here.

Wow, is all I can say. Things do get pretty testy from time to time over at the 'ol Klipsch forum. I've not had limited time to pay close attention, but I guess, unlike Dean, I certainly didn't see something like this boiling over. Sorry to see it, but glad you'll be dropping in over here.

Hey guys I joined here also dont worry BEC I wont bug you on drivers, but someday I will be ready. I just hope when that time comes, you still have the tweeters and die cast frame woofers.
Anyway good to see some members here, I have been busy remodeling the master bathroom, but I am still lurking.
Regards Jim Cornell

Me here too

Al,

Sorry to hear you have left the forum - we lose too many this way. Cant comment on your open letter - never understood X-overs enough to know what is what.

Anyway - at least I will know where to find you when and if I ever get a decent Heritage setup...

Sorry Clarence, but Craig oversee's all audio forums....watch yer step now buddy.....:thmbsp:

I do agree with the wide spectrum of info, tastes, and folks. And things stay on topic, but not enough to make things boring. AK is good place for noobs, they get help and never get intimidated.

I'm looking for a new washer. I think I'll roll over to the 2 channel Klipsch forum and see what's out there.

Guys,

My thanks again for the warm welcome. It's very nice to see!

I would like to ask who I should contact about becoming a "sponsor" here. I am actually a very low buget operation but since this forum isn't the "child" of a big company like Klipsch forums and their private sales tool, it looks like it is my responsibility to do it! As Brennan points out, there is a business (of sorts :boring: ) involved. Who should I talk to?

Al, welcome to AK - I used to post at Klipsch's forum frequently - but I found this to be a friendlier and more interesting community.

While looking at your website, I wished you made some custom crossovers for the non-Heritage stuff, like my Epics.

.......... My principal dislike is that at high volumes, the tweeter is very shrill and sounds like someone screaming directly in my ear. Do you think your crossovers could improve my Khorns? QUOTE]
There is a measurable phenomenon called "throat distortion" that all horn drivers experience. Air compressed in the horn throat becomes non-linear, that is, it cannot be compressed beyond a certain point, and this is an audible distortion. I believe throat distortion is what you hear. I remember listening to K Horns during my college days and hearing the same thing on rock and roll.
There are 2 ways to effectively eliminate throat distortion. The simplest is to turn down your volume. Experiment next time you notice shrillness (I assume you are not using vinyl, but vinyl has many other possible shrillness issues). The second way is to use less powerful amplifiers. What you do is limit the peak amplitude. Yes, you cannot go as loud, but the K Horn system I listened to at length was power by a pair of MC30s. At loud levels the typical tube distortion never caused listening fatigue, and the low power kept throat distortion under control. When the amp was replaced with an SAE 150 watt amp, the distortions would appear. HTH:thmbsp:

"There are 2 ways to effectively eliminate throat distortion."

Or go to a bigger throat. The horns used in the real Klipsch speakers use small throats, choked down to under 3/4". I noticed this several years ago when I substituted tractrix horns from the Klipsch Pro line for the stock mid horns in some Cornwalls I had, these horns had larger throats, ones that exposed the entire driver opening. I noticed an improvement (of course anyone modding notices an improvement) that may have been due to the increased throat size of the pro horns as much as anything.

This larger throat thing may be part of the improvement people some hear when substituting various other horns such as EV SM-120As (which really helped some LaScalas I had) for Klipsch mid horns. Of course different dispersion patterns apply here too.

Ole PWK thought efficiency itself lowered the forms of distortion he was interested in so he may have necked the throats down to increase it.

Guys,

When it comes to the Khorn, harshness is the usual complaint. Throat distortion is part of it, it's only about a 0.7 inch throat, but the squawker horn itself has all sorts of problems. The early ones are aluminum and they ring. A coat of damping material (dynamat) helps this a bit. Another problem is that it's just not a good horn to begin with. It's an outmoded design. I replaced the K500 horns im my Belle Klipsch with Altec 511b, then moved to 811b horns. The difference was dramatic. I'm using my Trachorns now. The sound quite similar. Another reason for hashhness is that all the Klipsch crossovers have no upper limiting components in the squawker portion. The squawker runs from 400Hz to light! Early K55V drivers had a "glitch" at 9 Khz that clashes with the tweeter. Klipsch counted on the K55 naturally pooping out a 6 KHz to for the crossover with the tweeter filter. Download and build my "Universal" network. It kills the glitch by 7 to 8 dB. BTW: Later K55V drivers had this problem fixed. These have solder terminals rather then push-pin connections on the older ones. The K55M drivers are ok too. The very newest K55x is a TOTAL RIP-OFF. It's nothing more than an Atlas PD-5VD PA driver with the Klipsch logo on it and the price jacked up to pay for printing the new label!

Al,

Sorry to see you leave the Klipsch forum. I know Trey very well, and I'm certain what set him off was your comment that "There is nobody at Klipsch that knows how to design filters properly." That's a blanket statement that holds no merit and frankly, I'm sure is offensive to all of our engineers here. I don't know anything about crossovers myself, so I will reserve further comments.

I apologize to all of you who have abandoned the Klipsch forum because of it's "hostile" atmosphere. I do what I can to prevent it, but it's difficult keeping egos in check.

Amy,

Moderating a Forum is an almost impossible task. AudioKarma (what a great place for Al to come to... AK to AK!) is one of the better ones because of the volunteer moderators. Other succesful boards have a similar structure.

It's something my friends at Klipsch might look into, as it would make your job easier, and give more responsibility to many of your best contributors. A quick look at the mods here will show you that they certainly aren't without strong opinions, but it's a great place because of their restraint.

Also, thanks for the new forum software over on the Klipsch Forum. As a Firefox user, I can edit my posts now!

Speaking of editing.... Al, how about editing the title of this thread so that it's a little more positive? I'm glad to have you here, and don't forget to visit the Speakers forum area!:thmbsp:
