I guess I'll be getting these woofers reconed to original specs: are there any particular recone kits I should be using?
( I read that 8ohm vs 4ohm on these = 3dB volume difference in the low end, which is significant. Also apparently it messes with the crossover network ).

What does it cost to recone these?
A brand new k33e is under $150 each. May be better off doing that and selling the old ones.

I have never done it, nor had had it done, but without the T/S specs after a recone my OCD would not let me listen to my speakers in peace. I would always be wondering if something was out, …welcome to my world.
If I remember correctly the K-34-E IS a K-33-E just with the gasket mounted on the back for flush mounting. So you could find a K-33-E on the cheap somewhere and then put a gasket on the back. The odds of you finding a K-34-E in the used market are slim. Having said that I hope to be proven wrong, but shipping up here will still be crazy.
Again, now you’re into throwing more money at it. They won’t be stock, but from personal experience, the Crites woofers WILL punch another handful of hertz into the low end. It’s impact is instantly recognizable.
Did you take a meter reading of the other woofer to see it’s resistance?

Ohhh...so that "Znom = 6ohms" explains the 6.33 ohm reading I got, measuring the speaker tabs?

No, but I wish I had! They're both reassembled now.
I only have space to work on them one at a time: I'd already finished the Left speaker, when I was working on the Right I found that link about 8ohm vs 4ohm woofer & decided to measure it.

This is a prime excuse to buy the GRS K33 from Parts Express and some foam window tape from your hardware store.

If anyone has a K33 or K34 laying around, I'd be curious what DC resistance you get across the speaker tabs?
That T/S chart specifies under "electro mechanical" resistance = 3.5 ohms
But then under "miscellaneous" Znom = 6 ohms
Since the Cornwall enclosure is rated at 8 ohms, people are probably assuming the woofer is 8 ohms when they get it reconed? But it should be a 4 ohm speaker.
And from the klipsch forum I found this:
"there are k-33 looking things out there with a DCR of 6.2 ohms and/or an impedance of 8 ohms. it's a brass colored twin brother used in the speakerlab khorn bass bin."

My Klipsch K33P measures 3.36 Ohms for DC resistance. An impedance measurement is totally different and is shown below.
When a "speaker system" is rated for impedance, the entire impedance sweep (frequency) is taken into account and then a nominal "system impedance" is determined.
In the case of the K33, it is coined a 4 ohm woofer, but when put into a complete speaker system, the system is now 8 ohms (nominal).

My K33E (Klipschorn) measures 3.6 ohms DCR at the crossover terminal. The wires and binding post will add a little.

So far I've seen mention of:
Crites stamped frame
GRS at Parts Express

Reconing is something I never bother to think about doing any more. The cost of reconing and my serious doubts as to the correct components being used plus huge time to get things done in Nashville ended my efforts. I would get a serial number from somewhere and just use it at Speaker Exchange. They never asked for proof of ownership, just an sn# and I imagine you can find one. Get the DATS 3 from Parts Express and you can learn to get real TS numbers so you can check that what you end up with is close to your remaining OEM woofer. If I ever were to get reconing done I would only do so armed with real TS parameters from an OEM woofer so if the reconing was crap you could get your money back. The reconer guarantees to duplicate OEM specs make sure he does.
