As a 4-way with a supertweeter kicking in at 12 kHz, I would not expect HPM 100 to have rolled-off highs, no, but I'm looking for verification of that, because it's clearly shown in the published response:

They are certainly "forward" in the midrange, judging from that, as well....
Why is that an issue?
If the speaker is accurate, it will faithfully reproduce whatever type of music is sent to it.
Is there something inherent in one type of music as opposed to another which would necessitate using different speakers to play them?
Quality vintage speakers are like quality vintage wine, and I like my Zepplin with HPM100!

I've never heard the HPM-900's so I cant do a sound comparison with the JBL's. I know the JBL L100t's and the L100t3's are easier to refinish because they're veneer and not the cheap wood imitation material. Also, I don't think the cones on the JBL's fall apart, so you don't have to go searching for a useable woofer or two, or invest in a recone job.:yes: Brad

Huh? I just spent 2 hours doing the initial sanding with #120 this afternoon on a pair of HPM-100s and it sure seemed like real walnut veneer to me. I'll do the light follow up with #220 tomorrow before re-staining them. Also, when I took the speakers out prior to starting in on them, I was impressed that the front baffle board was 1" thick. No wonder these pups are heavy. I'm debating whether or not to recap them before I sell them...

Just opinion of course, but overall, the L100t is better, and less fatiguing than the HPM100's. I have had HPM 100's and currently have L100t's and HPM1500's. I prefer the sound of the JBL's over both hpm's, but the 1500's are unbeatable on bass, and the super tweeters have that campy weirdo retro thing you just can't get in another speaker. Both are staying FORVEVER!
Also, the JBL's are monolithic in shape, and veneered on all four sides. Look completely sensible pulled out from the walls a foot or two. No stands necessary. (Wife disagrees of course)

Jeremy, just picked up the JBL speakers and is on the way home.I hope he gets the speakers home and setup without putting any marks on them.They were as close to mint as you can get for a speaker of that vintage.It is also good to see a college student take a intrest in 2 channel audio(there is more to music than IPODS and MP3 players)Jeremy enjoy your new speakers!!!!!

Well we all have our opinions. Having never heard the JBL's I can't comment on a comparison. But I can say that when tuned to the room they are in my HPM-100's are not the least bit fatiguing the wife and I might listen to them for 4-5 hours straight during our Friday night music dates and I have never found them to be anything but a pleasure to listen to.
But then ever room every system and every pair of ears are different as are tastes in music,
If I had the best pair of speakers in the world a few minutes of modern rap etc. and I'm pretty sure I'd be quite fatigued.

well here it is, and no, bobby, there were absolutely no marks put on these speakers. Great seller and DAMN!!! is all I can say about your McIntosh gear. 1200W per channel!!! Also, I have the HPM-100's still and tried them out, JBL on A and HPM on B. No comparison, JBL all they way.

The bass is better on the JBL, it is rear ported and the HPM is front ported, and the mids are truer on the JBL's, they sound slightly flat on the HPM's and the highs resound on the JBL's where the HPM's highs roll off. Has an overall deeper sound to it as well

And bigger boxes, and redesigned crossovers, and proper tuning, and....
Every time I look seriously at "fixing" L100, I end up with 4412 studio monitors. Having a similar driver complement, L100T and T3 are very much that, in floorstanders, with bigger bass. :thmbsp:
I have no experience with HPM-100s.
