I'm not sure what the measurments are, but every HP series I have heard is pretty much a disco speaker,@ Cerwin Vega. If you like that sound, great enjoy. But once you have really heard accurate full range sound, those HPM's will become liabiltys. I mean why have a super tweeter if you have a well designed 2 way (most ideal), or 3 way? It's like thos old Sansui multiple driver speakers, mere squak boxes diguised as high fidelity speakers. Add Mach Ones to this category, bloated mid bass, harsh highs, poor imaging, yuk!
I think part of the midbass bloat is due to cabinet resonance. Cheap, unbraced particle board, in which I think the engineers used to boost the apparent bass response by using the resonance.
Cabinet design is just as important, if not more is some designs as is the driver compliment.
I always had the same feeling about JBL's, perhaps the old L100's I heard years ago. However I recently heard a pair of L100t and was quite impressed, much more balanced, and seemingly accurate sound, with suprising imaging!
The big problem with multiple diver speakers is BAD imaging. Most 3 ways drive me batty, the sound is here and there. They might have a accurate frequency response and balance, but what good does it do if the imaging is so poor? Even if you listen to rock, etc it really makes a big difference.
Don't be sad, upgrade my freind, that's what the hobby is all about. You can always unload those HPM's on Ebay, or Craigslist. The name sellls, even with subpar sound.
