JBL L 250 A New Addition To My System

Last edited by a moderator:
Nice speakers, I have always liked that model JBL. Now I know you like your Sansui's but once you get those JBL's all refreshed, I don't think those Sansui's are going to be seeing much play time because I think your looking at a whole different league.

And I don't see anything wrong with those B & W's, they look just fine to me.

Thanks Ken

You are most likely right. Everything I have bought the last 50 days has put me in a different league.

But I'll be kicking and starching in backing my Sansui gear. You know!!

They couldn't produce Jet Engine noise. :deal:

Yep get everything cleaned, detailed, finished, new fabric. X overs can always be pulled out later if I think an improvement could be made.

Changing 30 year old caps is like changing the tires on your car. They have a lifespan that yours have surpassed. Its not tweaking the sound but bringing it back to factory spec.

What caps do you feel I need to change? What Brand? Were Do I get them?

I'll have one speaker striped down tonight with photos.

I wonder what is hiding in them?:scratch2: A roll of Gold Eagles

Lets hear it from the JBL folks at AK.

The troublesome caps are the blue ones (electrolytic). IMO they should be replaced with exact value bipolar electrolytic caps of good quality.

This is what I would do - fully updated and biased: http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulle...ilding-biased-250Ti-networks&highlight=n250ti

4313b is a master as well as friend of Greg Timbers who designed the 250Ti as well as many of JBL's best statement speakers.

Thanks I got lost in all the linked treads. Not done yet but as jblnut said it might be just fine left alone as original. I don't mined swapping out some caps but will stick to as JBL produced this speaker.:music:

I think the B&W are one hell of an ugly speaker sorry to any owners of. After all they are part of your home. Thats why I might lean towards a light tope color like sand stone with tan or white grill fabric. Light color will blend with the room and reduce visual mass.

The 250's are one of my favorite looking speakers. I also love the look of the B&Ws and could live with either for a long time. Congratulations on yours. :thmbsp:

Thank You cubdog,

Yes these do have a cool factor going for them. I think they look best without the speaker covers on the face, but should have some protection. My hopes are to be able to move though this project quickly. If interested post 108 has a link to photos that I will add to as I progress.

I'm pretty sure Zonker recapped the ones he had. I think he even may have swapped out some different botique caps. Shoot him a PM....or wait for him to show up (has he already visited the thread?).

He did show up and posted a link to his job on the Xovers.

The original network is just fine, actually very good. That's why if I were going to make a change it would need to have a significant potential for improvement. To support the N250TI you would also need to replace your HF and midrange drivers with the 044Ti and 104H. The 044Ti was used by other speakers in the Ti series so it can be found, but the 104H is very hard to locate.

JBL engineers used the least expensive components that would get the job done as long as sound quality was not compromised. I would not be afraid of the electrolytics they used or the bypass caps. They did move to Solen as used in the link I posted for their higher end designs at some point after the Ti series. The Solen caps do not need bypass caps.

I'm not sure I'm the guy to quote about leaving them as original. That thread was about my own l250s becoming 250ti's using a custom xover designed and built by a member of the Lansing heritage community. I never warmed to the LE5 and started modding my speakers soon after I got them. First came the 104h, then 044ti's and those xovers. Even now I continue to experiment - this year saw the low-pass xover board getting bypassed and replaced with full active xover and eq on the low end.

I hope to get my 044ti's refoamed soon as they have become brighter over time. There is always something that needs to be done...
