Just ordered the VPI 16.5 Record Cleaning Machine

How odd! I also ordered one last week, and it's tracking to be delivered Monday.....

Good for you...for US! Tomorrow will be a great day and I certainly hope that you receive yours as scheduled. Im in Chicago and mine shipped from Indiana. Where did you order yours from?

Well, after reading this thread, I've come to 2 conclusions...

1) I must muster the finances to purchase a VPI 16.5

2) I want a taco.

.

Big tip: it's pretty loud for the wife. Setting it up in the living room prob ain't such a great idea.

The loudness of it doesn't bother me. Had my 2 year old granddaughter for the weekend and she ran in to my computer/music room where I keep my VPI 16.5. She turned it on and abruptly came running out of the room screaming in terror. So I guess she thinks its loud.

Actually at times, I think the Taco is more important to have, and enjoy!:D

I'm thinking of the movie "The Doors", where Val Kilmer says at the end, "Let's go get some Tacos". Mark

Well, it wasnt tacos tonight. TONIGHT it was the new "YUMMY BUFFET" that opened up just down the block. A huge Asian buffet and my stomach is satisfied and telling me about it.

Ya know, I lived in Chicago basically all my life, and that's one thing I don't recall ever seeing, a Chinese Buffet.

Reckon times are a changing though, aren't they?

That's all we got here, is those darn buffets, and they are quite sucky.

I haven't eaten a good Egg Roll, good Cantonese Styled Food, good Fried Rice in seven full years. Only 1/2 way decent joint I've eaten at in NM, was a place up in northern NM, Farmington.

I knew basially every joint in Chinatown. Mark

UPDATE...grrrrr:

The shipment is in two boxes, which I knew. This just in, the cleaning supplies (smaller package) will be delivered today and the cleaning machine will be delivered tomorrow. I am frustrated. Still excited, but Ive had about enough of UPS right now.

Congrats are in order. I bought mine used on Agon and it arrived on 1/7/11. I've already cleaned about 60 records and although most of mine are not extremely dirty, my listening room is full of static electricity. Since cleaning records on the VPI, I have no more issues with static pops and clicks. What a huge difference. I also made a batch of home brew cleaner for about $5 a gallon and it works as good as the MoFi that came with it, which is $80/gallon. There a several recipes for home brew on AK. I use the VPI brush that came with it and don't have any issues with it at all.

As mentioned earlier, the directions state that the tank should be emptied every 6 records, but I cannot see why that is imperative. I cleaned over 40 before I emptied it the first time and there was probably about 5 or 6 ounces drained.

Does she have a problem vacuuming while you're watching football?
:D

Exactly! Mine is right next to the main system. My wife actually came into the room when she heard it because she wanted to see what a mess I was making. She was impressed that it was designed to contain all of the fluid...no mess at all.

So I have cleaned and listened to a few records already. One new and the rest were used. I have found that letting the fluid sit on the record for a minute and then doing the mentioned 1/4 turn scrubbing works pretty well. There is still some low surface noise and occasional clicks, but it is totally improved over any cleaning methods I have ever used. I am curious about doing a distilled rinse however.
This package included an extra cork pad and the plan was to swap them out in the cleaning process so that one pad would only ever be touched by a clean side. However, it seems VPI used the adhesive backing to attach one to the platter. So I tried placing the second on top of that one when cleaning the second side, but the center ring on the mat would pop out each time i tried to remove the pad. I finally decided to try it without the center cork ring and that works just fine.
Im having fun!

That doesn't sound like my VPI. can you share a pic?

I use a distilled water rinse from a spray bottle while the record is being vacuumed. I squirt behind the wand and it picks up the rinse the next time around. Thanks to AK'er specialidiot for suggesting the rinse and other tips. I am totally impressed with this deluxe gizmo. My cork pad is glued down also.

I'll second the clean new sleeve argument. With sleeves with art or other printing on them, I'll put the disc in the new sleeve next to the old sleeve in the jacket. With old, plain white sleeves, I just toss them.

On the second mat, I do the same thing - lay the backed mat on the regular, "stuck on" mat so the clean side doesn't touch the dirty mat. You have fewer threads to grab with the clamp, but it should still work.

For rinsing, I do another round of scrubbing, more lightly, with distilled water and a dedicated rinse brush. I feel that a squirt bottle doesn't get into the grooves enough. No evidence to back that up.

You might want to invest in new inner sleeves or at least wipe out the existing ones along with the sleeve of the jacket. Putting a VPI'd LP back in an old dirty inner kind of negates your efforts.

In post #7, the OP mentioned that he bought inner sleeves with the package deal and ordered extra ones. I like the poly lined white paper sleeves with the window for the label.

I'd be willing to bet that there aren't two of us who have the exact same process. IMO, there are some that do more than necessary, but to each his own. That does not mean that others suggestions are not welcomed.

Ill take some photos after dinner and walking the dog. I think you'll be shocked that my VPI looks like all the other VPI HW16.5's :boring:
I think I may get another Ikea expedit 2x2 to place it on or a nightstand with a couple drawers for the supplies and whatnot. Where do you guys have yours?
