I have had a good number of successful purchases through Buyee, and a few that were unfortunately damaged.

I find that the biggest danger when shipping turntables is that some sellers, even ones who do an otherwise excellent packing job, tend to leave the dust cover connected to the hinges on the plinth. This means that if the box receives less-than-gentle treatment in transit, the back of the dust cover has a high likelihood of completely breaking off, potentially causing plinth damage. Some sellers will place the platter on top of the dust cover, which makes this scenario even more likely.

Buyee refunded me half the purchase price when this happened, which I considered fair, as the damage was only cosmetic. In another case, when part of the plinth actually cracked, they refunded me the full cost.

I don't know that I would recommend filing PayPal claims if what they pay isn't to your satisfaction. They could potentially block you from bidding if it causes them any issues. There is always some inherent risk in buying through a proxy shipper, especially if you are relying on the original seller's packing job.

Some Japanese sellers also have the unfortunate habit of leaving the platter in place and taping it down, which may or may not result in bearing damage, depending on the turntable and the treatment it receives in transit.

Seeing that the shipping was 2-3x what the item cost, the only real recourse was to file a claim through paypal.

Luckily they arent the only game in town.

Yup they have very little service info.

It also doesnt mention cleaning/lubing pots and switches.

It should be serviced. Mine also operated just fine but had near zero oil.

Its super simple, taking about 30 min.

Are you sure?

Internals look near identical as my y3f and y7. Both spindles were nearly dry, requiring cleaning and fresh oil.

It would be hard to imagine they used a different design for a single model.
 
Yea, nobody figured these things would still be useful 40+ years later. The oil is most likely all dried up by now.

I’m glad I found this thread. I’ve bought a JVC QL-F4 turntable in excellent condition except from the lid (need a polish) I’ve owned different fully automatic turntable, but somehow this one beats them all in sound! The bass is much better on this one (I’ve came from a Technics SL-Q3) And somehow I prefer a mechanical fully auto instead of the electronic ones. Not so much can go wrong

I put my Denon DL-301 mk2 with a spacer to get correct VTA, it sound amazing!

Zenmarket seems to be pretty good with decent shipping costs, and they offer extra packaging options. Have a TT coming my way. Price for shipping was about 50€ for sea transport (Belgium, hallo buurman) so will have to wait for about two months and see how it arrives. Do not forget tax duty. The problem is that you will have to get a transformer from 230V to 120V. If you are a DIY you can put in your own transformer, that is what I'm planning to do. Will also depend on the power/input board, some are before the transfomer and make use of 120V motor making it harder to change. You can get some really amazing deals on YahooJP. There is however not much you can do when buying and the seller has send you a junk table when listed as working. But again, if you are a DIY, you can probably fix it yourself, so not much to loose when the price is right and the total cost is only 30/40% of what you would pay for it in Europe. Total cost for my TT (Denon dp-61f) will be 125€ plus tax if customs decides to hold my table. Late reply but have a ql-y5f on my bench for repair so was scrolling trough here :)​
Edit: decided to pay for tax including shipping, total cost will be 158€, not bad at all, just have to wait a month or two.​

I have the same. I just fixed mine. It s posted up on here somewhere. But basically it’s best to remove the old rubber and replace it with a 6mm thick rubber washer of similar diameter. Mine is now perfectly functional with just a small amount of droop. Was unusable before.
