KLH Model Seven speakers- ever heard them?

Close to 2ft wide, a touch over 2 ft tall, and a foot deep, they sport a 10" woofer or 12" woofer (KLH lit says 12") and twin tweeters. an 8 ohm speaker.

Opinions?

never heard or seen em. got any pics? Do these have the old school grill cloth (white/tan) or black?

Old School grill cloth. I'll try to post a pic in a bit, if I can, off the catalogue.

Picture a squarish model 6, with two tweeters in them, not centered, but in the corners (horizontal plane).

I'm attempting to land a pair fairly local to me. Rough condition of the veneer, they need work.

The real bad part?

It's the old model-

To do any work, you gotta crack 'em open, or cut them open, as the drivers are glued into the box- not like the later models, which are easy in comparison to fix, as they are screwed in.

Difficult to work on- a real pain in the rump.

If someone doesn't get 'em from under me, I'll make a long, slow, fun project out of them.

As always, however, it's my inability to drive that's causing the issue. Too far for me to wheel my wheelchair to- especially now that my leg is home to blood clots.

yuck.

Even if the drivers are molded in , as long as they're not rubbing or fried, go for it. You can carefully pry off the connector panel to get to the crossover caps. I did it in an early pair of 6s I had. Any old school KLH stuff is worth grabbing. they all have a rich fluid like sound to them.

I'll need a ride to get them, or work out a deal. I'd really like to pick them up, we'll see if it fall into place.

Not being able to drive is a drag, for many reasons.

Rhode Island based. about 30 or 40 miles from me.

cheers, my friend.

Thank you Rodney. You know, you're enabling me, right? :D

PM me your town- the fella is willing to deliver a short distance. He may want to stop by and see your swans. We could also envite him to the party.

By the way, I'm leaning towards the 18th. Sound good to you? I'll just need to end it by 6pm sharp.

Hope all is well!

Hey Guys! I have a pair of those RARE gems! They are basically model sixs with a cabinet that is 50% bigger with an extra tweeter thrown in. You would think that it would be an earth shaking unit. With the extra cabinet space the bass resonance point would be even lower than the sixes! That may be so but the pair I have must need a little work? They do sound very good but I'm sure they haven't come close to their full potential in their current condition.

If they were easy to get into I could recap them and redope the woofer surrounds. I am sure that would really improve the sound. But they are sealed like that mayonnaise jar on Funk and Wagnals front porch! One day I will decide the best way to get into them and see what I can do without causing much damage. Meanwhile they are part of a KLH/Advent collection so I won't worry too much about them.

The picture shows my pair which have had the original wooden runners replaced with casters. They are sitting beside an old Dumont console cabinet that I gutted and stuck a nice KLH Model twenty into. The speakers on top of the Model Sevens are Dynaco A25's. That gives you a reference for size. Nice historical speaker! Best! Franksta

retrofitting an old hi-fi console with a KLH all-in-one's a GREAT idea!

Those A-25's look sharp. Did you re-do the grilles on 'em?

Yes the retrofit was really just an afterthought it happened to fit just right. I've seen other cabinets since then that it would work nicely in also. You can just sit a small pair of bookshelf speakers behind those grille openings attach a portable CD player as another source to the AUX input on the Model 20/24 and it makes for a nice high WAF unit that really sounds good.

The Dynaco grilles were replaced with some fabric I found at Walmart believe it or not! It was a roughly woven material similar to what KLH uses. Not original but it turned out nice. There is no other choice when the originals were torn and stained as these were.

Please forgive the highjacking of the thread! Not much info on the Model Sevens however. Any suggestions from woodworkers or carpenters as to how to surgically enter the back panel on them? OR, maybe remove the whole back panel and make another one with nice cabinet grade fur. Then maybe you could add cletes around the edges of the back to mount it with screws for easy future removal? I know that would alter the original form of the speaker but there has to be some solution? Also the grille cloth on these has some stains that I tried to remove. I wonder if the front panel is removable once/if you could get into the back? The grille fabric on the front covers the entire front panel. Perhaps it was wrapped all the way around the panel before installing. That makes me think that the panel may be removable even with the speaker epoxied in. Things that make you wonder :scratch2: Like why in the heck someone would seal this thing up like that to begin with! Best! Franksta
