Looking east from the house I grew up in at the Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. You can see trinity site 12 miles away:

It is just a shadow of what it was in the 1970's when water was abundant, in a winter back then it would have a few hundred thousand birds. The corn fields were packed full of Sandhill Cranes and the pond down below our house typically held 50,000 snow geese at night. After several years of droughts in the 1990's the birds migration pattern changed a bit and today wildlife photographers go gaga when they see a flock of 50 cranes. The best time to go is between Thanksgiving and New YearsBosque del Apache is on my short-list of places to visit.
