Just got this beauty the other day to go with my JM-S7 from the same era.
Just a guess, but it probably took a good bit of time and patience to find the missing piece, congrats ! Always nice too when someone else has been in it and it's still working well.
 
Out of all the audio gear that I have, the JVC 3-cassette decks and one CD player are the most reliable.
I believe that 110% ! The CDP in the photo looks like a XL-Vxxx from 87-88(?). I have a 1988 XL-V333 I purchased used in '89. I replaced a CD tray/drawer belt. That's it. Bought an identical one cheap years ago to use in the garage, only needed a drawer belt and transport belt.

My primary CDP now is an XL-Z411 of the same vintage. Has a better processor and has basic line out, variable out and coax out. Have a ton of other old JVC gear, including two old quad receivers, untouched after 50 years. Both work, need some attention. Low end to high end, very dependable stuff, at least into the mid '90s.

The CD player is a XL-V95. It's a no frills player but sound great!

I am just gonna separate myself from mine which have been fixed by a former Victor engineer along with some other stuff.

Please keep yours !! The only reason of the sale is I can't keep all Victor stuff (I use another Victor preamp).

I have one as well, given to me free. The door is missing, and not quite as clean as yours, though nice, and sounds terrific. I keep it as a backup, just in case.
A-X77 today. Mine is in great shape, although I do have some bulbs out .
 
Oh yes, I had two of them, they are top notch. Sound with a bit more noise as good as the mighty AudioCraft PE-5000 phono stage, that's not small feat.

They were released to use with TT-101. If you ever need, I do have the unfoundable IC for them. The only reason to get rid of them was to go to passive controller way and for another Victor preamp.

Only cosmetic issues are a couple marks on each of the cabinet tops. One worse so than the other. I’m planning on having them professionally refinished to factory spec, minus the nasty brown grilles, which I think will look much better in satin black.

I’ve been deep diving these units for the past few days and it really seems JVC/Victor went balls to the wall with the design. (Whether or not it translates to more than just marketing points remains to be seen). Thankfully, they released a comprehensive circuit theory / technical manual to go along with the service manual to make understanding the schematic a bit easier. I’m very glad they didn’t implement the GM modules in these amps like they did with the P-L10. They are unstable and make servicing hopeless if they fail. One obstacle to overcome however are the VC5022 “Super A” IC chips that are used in the sliding bias circuit. These are known to fail if the amplifier is given a hot supper, and aren’t readily available from any reputable source. They are another subject I’ve been researching in preparation for their potential replacement.

GM modules?
JVC/Victor engineers implemented an interesting current/voltage conversion circuit in the volume control and equalizer amplifier stages of the P-L10 in order to reduce distortion and non linearity caused by output and load impedance discrepancies. Issue is, they designed it around a sealed epoxy module that is known to be relatively unstable. Virtually impossible to repair when they go sour. The issue is compounded since no technical information or schematic is provided about the circuit sealed within.

What preamp are you planning on using with them? Like you I avoided the P-L10, I've been using a Luxman C-12 with mine.
Eventually they’ll be paired with my Krell KBL when I have everything squared away. Excited to hear them at their full potential :)

The C-12 is a great preamp. It has the DML modules, but most of them were updated at the factory and the ones that weren’t can be replaced by new-production modules that work nicely. Enjoy it!

If possible, don't use an active preamp with them, it was good at the time because preamps of Victor were mainly designed for two roles : help a bit the power amp not to get too hot, and phono preamp, integrated, and equalization..

But now, we take better care of this material than before. GM modules were and still are a huge development into chip design, at the time, Victor was facing massive industrial spying due to their high-tech. They had to protect with hundreds of patents each of their chips. That's why they were so precaucious regarding those chips. People wouldn't believe the massive safeguards things they had to do and the cost it had.

VC5022 too needs special care but is more safer to use than previous version, it's gen 2 Super A chip, this one doesn't bother me that much.

I absolutely agree with their perspective of secrecy and applaud them for their development. I just wish they had a very rough schematic at the very least about what the chip does. Oh well. When I come across a P-L10 I will likely crack the modules open to reverse engineer them. I see photos online of people who have opened the modules. They appear to have single sided through hole circuit boards encased inside. They used the dreaded corrosive glue to hold the modules to the boards, which worsens the problems therein.

In terms of the 5022 chip, I was under the impression that the M-L10 uses the first generation and not the “-2” variant. I still need to open my M-L10s to see for myself. I see many conflicting posts online regarding them.
