Log out, log in anomaly - change bookm@rk to https

I get sent directly to an error page without clicking a link.

I closed and reopened my browser to clear everything out first.

Went to https, signed in, switched to http, clicked a link and was back in https with the same prob as before.

JUst delete your current bookmark and make a new one. It is posted around here somewhere but that worked for me.

Lets all try an experiment. I'll explain what is happening if it works.

Enter AK, however you usually do. Make sure you are at the home page. Look at the web address at the top of the page. If the address is https:, change it to http: and re-load. You should now be at the home page but the web address above should be http: ​

Now navigate around the site as usual, avoiding hitting the "Home" tab, which will reset you to https: Instead, to get to the home page hit the "Forums" tab. For now, you should be able to navigate the site without getting an https: prefix. Report back whether the logging out issue persists for you.​

For those that get logged out, in any state, click the "Log in" button. When the log in page presents, and it's address has an https: prefix, edit the prefix to http: and re-load. Verify that the log in page that presents has an http: prefix. Log in. You should again be able to navigate the site normally, and the page addresses should have http: prefixes, as long as you do not hit the "Home" tab. Navigate around normally. Report back whether the logging out issue persists for you.​

I have a theory, and have performed these experiment steps myself, with positive results. However, I need some regression test results, across the various platforms being used to access AK.

https is working great for me at the present time.

I change it to http and re-load...it gives me the old 'not secure' address in the bar. I can't log in.

Switched back https, and it's fine again. Can even use the Home tab, for now anyway.

Did that and it logged me out and I was unable to log back in. Clicked my https bookmark and was logged in again in https without signing in.

It works for me, even on the threads which were previously the biggest offenders. I wish I could bookmark without the https, but I can’t edit the actual address. It’s fixed in safari for iOS.

I noticed when searching with Google, there is a secure symbol in the search bar.

Then when actually on AK I still have secure symbol.

When I try to backspace or leave to go to another thread the secure symbol will flash off and stay off or flash off and come back on. That's when I get logged out.

When searching with Yahoo, the same exact thing will happen with the secure symbol, but I do not get logged out.

So I believe this toggling back and forth between secure and unsecure is causing my logged out problem.
It's the only thing I can notice happening during the logged out problem. So at this point using Google is completely unusable for me.

I tried to get Google Chrome but it says I need 11.X.X version. But at this point I don't know if that would really help anyway.

Yes it never logs me out, just not as user friendly for videos or pics and that sort of thing.
Also even though I check "keep me logged in" if I'm not active on AK for a while I get logged out. But other than that I can navigate through AK no problem.

I did try, but Safari for iOS sees the xenforo home and adds the ‘s’. No matter, I’ll keep using it thru this link, while avoiding the home button. It works, I’m happy enough with that.

Here is what I think may be happening: logging into the https: layer does not log you into the http: layer that it appears to be riding upon. If you can log into the http: layer, you will also be logged into the https: layer also, but not vice-versa. When various elements are loaded, sometimes http: data gets included in a way that makes the site-browser interaction barf. This is what it looks like to a long-time software engineer whose specialty is not extensive in modern internet protocols. All I know is that, for me, if I log into the http: layer (using the http: login page), the rest of my AK session is logout free, even if I begin accessing via the https layer.

I'm using an older OS and browser that is giving me a bit more granularity than new stuff may provide. I hate newer stuff. It generally abstracts me too much from what is going on. That makes things harder to troubleshoot and correct.

I have reported my findings and interpretations to site admin. Maybe our work can help them. I don't have access to the requisite tools and controls myself.
