First R117 recapped
Just thought I would post pics on the first of my R117s that will be recapped. I have recently had to replace channel A speaker relays when a power surge in my house finished off what were probably already weakened relays. I use the receivers amp section only, still haven't figured out how to improve the pre section, using a recapped TP117. The speakers I am using are Magnepan 3.3Rs and the receiver has no problem driving them to satifying levels. Anyway, here are the pics of a basket case R117 that turned into the most listened to piece in my collection. It is truly remarkable.

I will be recapping my R-117 end of winter...Need to complete a few other Recaps.
You are using My favorite Caps (Silmic II)...Just Love these..I also use in combo with Nichicon FG's as these are Great Together.

Yep SilmicIIs for the vast majority, Nichicon and Panasonic audio grade electrolytics where I could not get the Silmics easily. Also I did all the film caps too. Mostly Nichicon if I remember correctly. The nice thing about it is I documented all the caps in tables by board in an Excel spreadsheet. I set up the tables to show original part symbol(board Id number), Luxman part number, oem value description, board used on, original spec(measured), replacement spec(measured), and a note field for any issues found or things of interested. As I recall very few caps had any material variances from spec.
Anyhow found some of the before pics. Note the fields of blue meanies.

Interested in seeing the before measured numbers for those old caps compared to what they should have been.
I did a quick review of the original caps vs their original specs and they are just as I thought. Not one was materially out of tolerance, in fact the vast majority were right on or beat spec. If you are really interested in the actual numbers I can cut and pasted the tables into a text file for you to review. The Excel file is rather large due to all the formulas I used in setting up the data.

Just the general info on the caps being at or off spec. The C-1000 preamp I did recently had many caps that were just bad, but I need to check them again to see how bad.
Most likely a combination of the added age and older manufacturing technics/materials of the times it was built in. I got the same results on the TP117 preamp I recapped. Did the same Excel spreadsheet method and recorded the values. Again no material variance, even on the power board caps which looked like cr@p.
I have always wonder what the older Luxman preamps sounded like. I was a young man when they came out and couldn't afford them, but they looked great. They still fetch a good price on the used market so I am leary of taking the chance of buying something that does not meet expectation. Someday maybe I'll be able to pick up a non-working unit on the cheap to find out.
