Luxman Suck Face Now Showing

The suck face can be repaired, seen some with bad motors, and worn gears, but the majority (90%+) of them have a bad belt in the motor drive, tiny belt inside the gear box that eventually gets soft and streaches. Takes some courage to remove the front panel, pull the drive mechanism, remove the gear box, and finally get to the belt, hardest part is finding another belt that is the same size, if the diamiter is the slightest larger it will rub on the side of the case and jam up....
 
When are you going to put a index page up for the monster receivers? I've only asked you that about a dozen times now.

Being a Luxman I bet it sounds good, though.

I call that Luxman gear with the servo faces and colored buttons the "x" gear...it all has "x" as the second character in the model number. And I like it. That stuff seems to be pretty rare as well. I am pretty sure it was only made in one or two years. I just bought a mint tx-101 tuner and I have my eyes open for the servo face integrated amp to match it. It seems the only items with the servo face are the tape decks (the kx-101 does anyway), the recievers, and the integrated amps.

Rhinofly -- You RX-101 must be EXTREMELY rare. I'd love to get some photos of it and the matching Integrated Amp. to add to my page. The KX-102 was the TOTL 3-Head Cassette Deck that goes with the series along with the PX-101 TT. I'm currently trying to find some of those. I'll report on the sound once everything is all together.

Damage - There's a little Monster Receiver logo at the bottom of each page, which, if you click it, will take you to the index page. However, I should have made that more obvious and will re-do the site when I get a chance. Thanks for brining this to my attention.

Here is what I know about the X gear.

Tuner: tx-101 (no servo face)

Integrated amp: lx-104 (servo face)

Preamp: cx-100 (no servo face)

Power amp: mx-100 (no servo face)

Equalizer: gx-101 (no servo face)

recievers: rx-101, rx-102, rx-103 (servo face)

cassette decks: kx-100, kx-101, kx-102 ( I know the kx-101 is a servo face)

turntables: px-99, px-100, px-101

CD Players: dx-104, dx-103

Note that the cosmetics on the cd players are different. The dx-104 is a rare vertical load player and there is a good photo over at vintage knob. There is currently a dx-103 for sale on ebay.

There is currently a guy selling the tuner, integrated, equalizer, and a cassette as a package for $750 bin on ebay.

Thanks for that info! I had thought it would be a cracked or stripped gear because I wouldn't have thought anyone in their right mind would but a belt inside a transfer case like that! One of these days I will have to resurrect the face function on my RX102 and KX100. When i got them I unplugged the motor and locked the mechanism in the "in" position so I can operate the controls. I thought I would have to get a new gear from Small Parts Inc. and I put the repair off. When I repaired Luxman Equipment at an authorized dealer I saw very little of it, like the Maytag Repairman.
FWIW, the achilles heel of the Suckface design is the limit switch. If it gets dirty, the motor could keep running at the end of it's travel. At least that's what I remember from working on mine, that the switch has to close to stop the motor, rather than open. Is that right, Terry, or am I remembering wrong?
As to the unit quality, the sound is sweet and warm, and the Tuner is very sensitive. I use it at work where we have lots of computers and test equipment making rf noise, and a concrete building killing reception. It pulls in stations very well even under those conditions.

I have a luxman t-02 tuner which was made around the same time as the X gear. It also has the C.A.T tuning system and it works very well (the R-404, R-405 recievers also have this system). It will be interesting to compare performance of the t-02 to the tx-101 when it arrives. Both were produced at roughly the same time. I find it interesting that the fmtunerinfo has no review of the tx-101. I will report back in a week or so when the tx-101 arrives.
 
Don't remember how the switch operated, do remember that being spring loaded it had to go all the way in to maximum tension before the motor would stop, if the belt slipped it would run forever, same if it got in a bind, the slipping belt was the safety so the little planitary gears would not strip.
