Woofer mods

It will extended the top end to 3khz. I have done 4 woofers and all are consistent and extend to 3khz!

It will help the 600 boost but opening the midrange area and coating the woofer will get rid of it all!:yes:
 
Ive noticed in your photos that your cone looks almost like felt, on the 4024a,s that i have the cones were much more matted and a little glossy, the affect was not as complimentary as it was in yours, is the purpose of the glue to make the cone more rigid?

1..It will increase the frequency response of the woofer.
2..It adds a lot of strength that is much needed, makes the cone much more rigid, this also lowers distortion.
3..It also weather proofs your speaker.
4..It adds mass, needed for Tier 2 Upgrade.
5..It gives the faded cone back it's original color.

For anyone that is involved in these upgrades I have to say videoladys advice has been not only very informative, but changes i have made to my speakers have had a very positive affect. I may not be an expert on speaker design, but i have an ear for music and notice very minute differences in sound reproduction. So far i have drilled the openings to increase area for the woofer, added felt to the mid range (my gaskets were still supple and intact) and painted the woofer cones with crazy glue. I cant wait to recap with info soon to be provided and wish to thank you videolady for all of your advise, i know knowledge and talent when i see it.
 
I know this if off topic, but I just wanted to post about it because I am quite surprised.

I had my Mach 5000 speakers on my Yamaha RX-397 (New receiver, 50 WPC) and they sounded good. Then I managed to get the matching Optimus STAV-3000 receiver for them (100 WPC) so I put the Yamaha on my Nova 10's for a while.

My dad wanted the Nova 10's back after a while (Which was fine, because they were his back in 1983). So, out of curiosity I tried my Yamaha with my Mach Ones. I can't get over the sound! The sound is clean.

I think the main reason for my post, is if your looking for a new receiver to go with your Mach Ones that has remote capability, look into the Yamaha RX-X97 series (397,497,797). They seem to be able to run these power hungry speakers.

As I started this new design, I tried many amps on the Mach Ones! After all this testing, no amp that I tested came as close as the Realistic STA-2080 as being the optimal/best amp for the Machs. It is a very high current design, which is what they like. A very full bodied midrange that is smooth. Other units did sound good but didn't drive the units the way I wanted. So, after all this testing, I voiced the new Tier 2 upgrade around the Machs be driven by the STA-2080 and all listening test were done with this amp! A list of amps I used and tested are shown below. The ones that start with an (*) are the ones I felt performed the best with the Machs!

I may try and purchase a realistic 2080 but my Marantz 2275 seems to sound pretty good, if you ever get a chance to try this model, let me know how it measures up.
 
Do you think the speaker treatment will work on smaller woofers like a fullrange 3" or Minimus-7 woofer?
I like to test it on something besides a relatively rare 4024.
 
If you read the entire thread you will note that changes are being made top to bottom including crossovers on the Mach 1 4029, 4024 and 4024a. videolady can correct me but i think these changes are for these models alone.

You can use it on any paper pulp driver! As the paper pulp cone ages, the bond in the fibers starts to turn loose and the cone softens up. This is due to moisture content changing, the same thing that causes the foam to rot. This is the reason that a lot of older 4024 or 4024a drivers buckle under high power usage. Coating the cone will not change the driver, except it will make it perform like it did when it was new when the fibers were tight. It will also lower distortion and make the driver more linear. The less the cone flexes the more linear the audio output will be! :yes:

I'd like to add my yamaha 795 (in my signature) and the STA-2500. Both drive the Mach's quite handily. I'll be testing them with my Fisher some day.

If done right you will not need more than 2 oz. This glue is very thin and covers and wicks into the fibers! Here is a link, however this is not the no-fume formula. You will need to check a local hobby shop for that.

In my 4024a,s i have regular fibreglass behind the woofer and midrange, would it be better to replace that with somthing more rigid like fibreboard or roxul ?

No, the fiberglass makes the speaker see a larger cabinet and is the best medium for Acoustic loaded speakers. However, this is a great question.
 
I stopped to buy super glue to coat my 4024a woofers. Is there any difference between cyanoacrylate and cyanoacrylate esters for this application?
 
One of my suppliers carries a product that can be sprayed on, and supposedly strengthens the cone, but it also leaves a gloss finish. I haven't used it, but I'm tempted to. I could try it on a damaged cone to see if the finish is mildly glossy or really shiney, in which case I wouldn't use it.
 
Like a few of us here i have been making changes to my 4024a,s to improve sound. Through advice from video lady i have drilled the 3, 31/2 inch holes to allow more space for the woofers, added gaskets to where the horn mounts and rear upper panel, added felt to the front of the tweeter, painted the woofer cone with supper glue and replaced fiberglass to the upper and lower portion behind the woofer and mid range. The sound improvement was noticeable and definitely an improvement. My base was very pronounced and generally the mid range and tweeter reproduced to quite a natural level. I did find however that with bands like Heart and Fleetwood mac that the highs at times were ear piercing. I run these speakers using a Marantz 2275 and a pioneer turntable withe a green grado cartridge with the Van Alstine longhorn mod. While reading many posts from Audio Karma and many other audio chat sites i found most people agree that to produce purer sound vibration needed to be reduced. I decided to remove the woofer and line the back, sides and bottom with ice shield, also installed it on the woofer magnet leaving a hole to allow the filter to breathe, also i added it to tweeter magnet, some to the upper and lower portion of the horn. Im not sure if you agree with this but i have found my mid range and tweeter are no longer ear piercing but reproduce almost life like sound ,the base hits notes i have never heard before. I may not be very knowledgeable in building speakers but i always strive for purer sound and this has helped achieve this.

This may be out of line, as you did not ask any advise. However, if you are coating the woofers for any of the mods I have designed, the spray coating would not be good. The CA is a polymer of a selected composition that corrects issues in the Mach woofers, known and highly tested. If you do use something else I do not believe you will receive the intended results. Just thought I would point this out.
