Magnovox Phono Console

I used Blue Magic liquid polish, it's good stuff. I didn't cover anything, just a drop on a dry soft cloth so it can be controlled. Wipe, rub then a different clean area of rag to polish. Used qtips around and under.

If your audio source is low impedance, it won't. What was the impedance of a ceramic pickup anyway? One could insert a pair of resistors of the equivalent resistance to simulate that impedance, and then the bass control should have an audible effect.

My source was this computer. I'm debating just ordering up everything underneath and going through the whole thing. I need a tube now too and maybe some sockets. This little guy doesn't impress me at all from what I've listened too from the one channel. Depends on if I think I want to do this just for doing it.
 
You can't really blow a tube in a good working circuit unless you actually broke or cracked the glass, then it's belly up! :thmbsp:

I mean :thumbsdn: Need a new tube! :D
 
This is the socket for the 6EU7. When I was replacing one of the .1uf caps and dealing with the glob of solder they used to connect 400 things to the one connector it pulled up. Center of picture next to cap. Can I set it back down and put epoxy across where it broke ?

Most of the inputs for ceramic carts I've seen have been at least a 1 meg impedance. Not sure what the cart itself is, but its probably a few meg.

I'd just replace teh socket,,,, check the resistors while you're at it, you'll probably find them out of range, so they need replacing also...

Replaced some resistors that read bad. Sounds like crap still, I noticed when you put the source in either input you get sound from the one side ? Is this thing really stereo ? It's not making me want to run out and buy a new pair of 6BQ5 tubes. I'm pretty much spent out on it already.
 
Yes, it is a stereo amplifier. If you plug in to the left RCA jack, you should get sound from the left output tube and speaker output. Same with the right input RCA jack.

Have you got your speakers connected properly? Make sure that black balance control knob on the rear is centered.

EDIT: Sometimes these speaker connections throw some people for a loop because there is only one COM but two left & right lugs designated as 1 & 2. Both speakers need to have their negative connected to the single COM while both speaker positives will be connected to the 1 & 2 lugs for left & right respectively.

I've completely cut out the pre amp, bass, treble, volume and balance. One side is much less power that the other and I get bleed through from one side to the other. Wish I hadn't lost that tube, but I'm not buying another with it not working.
 
What tube did you lose? It won't work without the 6EU7 on either channel. One 6BQ5 drives one side only so if the other one is gone, you won't get the other channel. The 6CA4 is the rectifier tube and the amp will not work at all without this tube.

Let's see some pics of your work. Fresh eyes might see if you inadvertently disconnected the wrong wires when trying to remove the preamp.
 
Lost a 6BQ5 right off the bat, been doing one side then the other with one tube.

The green and white wires from rca's to 6EU7 5 and 8. That's where the pre controls were going in too.

Using a single 6BQ5 tube to compare channels is not the best way to do things. The one single tube that you are using for both channels may sound great in one channel but not that great in the other channel is not the tube. It is something associated with that channel like an open or way out-of-spec resistor.

Be sure to keep the two 220KΩ resistors (red/red/yellow) connected to the RCA inputs to ground.
 
Oops, okay the 220k resistors are there now, they were on the bass pot. That helped with the bleed, but not completely. The volume is week on both sides, I was getting week volume on one side loud on the other.

Popping now too, could that be the old can capacitors I haven't received yet?
