Marantz 2270 Survey

The Marantz 2270. Like a fine bottle of wine, the Marantz 2270 seems to get better with age. Can anybody tell me if one year was better than the next?

My sentiments exactly. Some hi-fi enthusiasts have suggested that their were certain years to stay away from. Is that correct? If so, which years were they? Jay

I think there would be very little differance between the years. They are getting up there in years now, so a tune-up might be a good idea, any short comings in the design as the lovely Brits like to say "can be sorted out". Mine are just a few apart, Sun Valley #39008 and #41623 played with the same source,cables(patch cords) and speakers,and I can't hear any dif. IMHO! When EE roomie gets done with all this HDFM crap at work, he's gonna have "a go" at 'em:yes: I'm gonna say they both will sound better yet still the same. If anybody chimes in with updates to ones from this era(I'm guessing mid to late in the model run from the #'s) or just plain updates/upgrades, Thanks, Craig:thmbsp:

marantz 2270

I have an earlier model and two later models. They all seem to dance around the room and the clarity is amazing. The later models are within 6 months of each other and they have an enormous amount of bottom end power. By the time you hit a quarter volume, the house is rocking.

The later ones have more Main Supply capacitance... Mine is an early one. I added more capacitance and it did make a very noticeable difference in the Bass. The early ones had 6800uf caps vs (I think) 9600uf main filters. Other than that, I don't think there is much difference.

You can tell early from late, by the color of the main filter caps. The early ones are gray and the later ones are black.

My wife still likes the 2270 the best.... because it sounds great and has less knobs than the 4400...but she does think the 4400 sounds great, it just scares her with all the knobs & the scope.... . I would never sell the 2270.

Hey Stu, forgive my ingorance here but when you refer to your two 2270's as Sun Valley, what is that refering to ?
Thought I read somewhere it has something to do with the ? color of the face plate....I may have that wrong...Thank You

I have four 2270's, the early ones have black speaker terminals, the later red/black and improved thermal tracking on the transistors, I guess I prefer the later model ones too, Dave. :yes:

Fuse Panel

I have also noticed in the older models the fuse panel is located in front of the right bank(output transistors). I havn't looked closely to see where it's located on the newer models.

Also, on the older models where the tuning wheel is located on the faceplate it says <-Tuning->. On the newer models it says
<-Gyro-Touch Tuning->. Check it out. Jay

The fuse panel probably belongs in a Euro or military version with switchable mainsvoltages. The fusepanel was added later caused by European safety regulations,(that's why it is in such an awkward postion, upright in front of the right poweramp) the 120V US model didn't have a fusepanel, just one fuse on the rearpanel.

The Model 2270 had a rather long production time from 1971 to 75or even 76? Marantz made small changes in the outer design, knobs, speaker terminals, different front panels in the early days. Inside, there were modifications to the poweramps, current limiting circuitry changed with more 'modern' output transistors (Motorola - Fairchild - Hitachi - Toshiba - Sanken)

Over the years, I've seen alot of Model 2270 from all vintages, but could no say which one was the best.....

you've been very helpful with identifying the early models. Euro/ Military models. The last 2270 I purchased was stamped 1976 5 13 (May 13, 1976) and it's a power house. It has the Fairchild output transistors installed in the unit. www.classic-audio.com/ might have to do an update on the 2270 production years.

Some critics claim that marantz/superscope began to cheapen out on the 2270 in the later years. Maybe on the outside but on the inside they seem to have more bottom end power. What's your take?

I have one of the early versions. It has the wonderful champagner, engraved frontplate.
The 2 big caps are gray, speakerpushers are black ... but it was build in Japan.
My Marantz 19 is build in the USA.
Are there really 2270s build in the USA? :scratch2:

I just know, when my Pioneers were build, by the first 2 serialnumbers.

2270 production date

On the 2270s if you lift off the metal cover, along the top edge to the right corner, above the faceplate you'll see a production number. Some were covered with black sticky adhesive(probably to hold the metal cover or housing in place?). If you gently wipe the adhesive away you should see a production number. Starting with the year, month, day.

That is one beautiful receiver Siamac. I've only seen them on eBay a couple of times.

Were their 2270s built in the U.S.A.? I'm not sure. I've been trying to find that out myself. Some die hard 2270 collectors say that after Superscope took over that they started producing the 2270 in Canada before they moved to Japan. Superscope did have a factory in Ontario in the late sixties and early seventies. Can anyone verify if the 2270s were built in the U.S. or Canada? Jay

Output Transistors in the 2270

I've noticed over the years that marantz has used different ouput transistors. Can anybody tell me if there is any difference between the three or four that were used? Thanks, jay
