Marantz Imperial 7 question

Just found a pair of these at the thrift store for $5. The loudspeakers appear to be intact, and the boxes are in fair condition. Any opinions on these?

The foam grills are usually rotten to particles by this time. If I remember correctly, the midranges will likely need re-foaming, as well as the woofers (same issue as the grills). If they are fully functional, they are a nice sounding speaker, and do not need too much power to drive. A 45 WPC amp or receiver will drive them nicely. I ran a set of these for many years.

Thanks! The grills are missing and the speaker surrounds pass the pinch test. Sound very nice! I just repaired a luxman r-3055 that should drive them nicely.

As far as I remember no foam surrounds.

The surrounds on the woofers are rubber, no rot. However if they are later models the mids had foam surrounds and did rot. The earlier ones had doped cloth surrounds. nomway to tell until you look at um. Still worth the fiver.

As for grills, partsexpress has kits. Cut the parts to fit and attach the cloth. They come with magnets to attach them too. I had a pair, recapped them and gave them to my son. He seems to like them.

Well I got them home and they're a huge improvement over the Infinity bookshelf speakers I was running. I want to recap them, but I went to look at the crossover it was a little unfamiliar to me (see picture). I resurrected an old thread about this elsewhere, but since I've got you here, maybe you can answer my question. It looks like I need to replace this one cap with two separate caps, but there's only 1 negative lead running out of the original. When you recapped it, did you just connect the negative terminal of each cap to that black wire, or did you run a second wire?

It is two caps in one. And yes connect the two negitive leads to the black wire. Also rotate the woofers 180º to compensate for any sag in the woofer suround.
