My updates on all of my Win 7 machines are off from the beginning. I keep clones of all of the machines right away; so, if I am assaulted, I can just format and reinstall. Storage backups for music, movies, etc. are on offboard hard drives. I am backed up like crazy, but in all these years of use I have never been assaulted and using the free version of Avast keep the little bugs out.

I must admit that every time I post one of these threads, I always come away with new knowledge and understanding. Thanks to you all.

My Acer Win10 desktop, which started life as a Win8 unit, takes whatever updates Win10 throws at it and works like a champ.

My updates on all of my Win 7 machines are off from the beginning.

I keep current, but one early this year hosed the win7 machine. And I have also been hit with ransomware before. Since I maintain offline images of the OS via an application called Macrium Reflect, I really don't care. A thirty minute restore returns to me to working fashion.

Similarly, I store data on a mirrored NAS that is also regularly backup up to offline drives.

Hopefully everyone not doing updates doesn’t do any type of banking or buying online

I only make purchases with OPC (other people's computers) and OPCC (other people's credit cards).
Works like a champ. Definitely worth the extra legwork.

System restore is your friend.

Ubuntu is mine,Ive never had a problem since migrating over more than 10 years ago.
Its a choice to look into and its free.

I moved to a new off the shelf Dell Inspiron with W10 last April. Extremely fast machine (and has not even hick-upped) but the change to 10 was very frustrating and nearly ate my lunch. I posted my angst about it here a couple of times.
It was so frustrating that I was about to go back to my Vista machine but I spent the better part of a whole day and night banging away at my keyboard one weekend and when I was about to throw the towel in, rebooted the machine and it has worked like an ever-lovin' charm ever since. I don't know what box or boxes I checked or unchecked and
I have absolutely no earthly idea what I did and I really probably don't want to know but
its working and working well.

Learned to use it after pecking around so much

I still run several MS Win 7 Pro machines. But I run them as virtual machines on a Mac Pro (a 2008 model) as a VM server. I do not use windows update 'cuz I only use the VMs to run windows specific software (not internet based stuff). If I ever have a problem, I just run another VM image. My main computer system is another Mac Pro (a 2010 model) with 4 monitors. I am running two Win 7 VMS, each one in its own monitor. The other two monitors are macOS. Despite the older hardware and the older Win7 OS, my software runs quickly with no detectable delays.

I've got two Win 10 machines, my spare HP Elitebook and a off-lease HP Workstation that is my media server. In each machine I spent a couple of hours removing the Win 10 cruft and getting them down to a more trim OS.

My Wife & My main systems, ASUS Desktop & ASUS Laptop run Windows 7.

Mint here. Internet traffic is really quiet. If anything's going through my modem it's YouTube or a streamed radio station. It's not Win 10 having an intense circle jerk with the Mothership.

But it is not for the un-informed. Unfortunately Unbuntu is still more for geeks.

Where do you get that idea from?If you have an Android device then your already using modified Linux platform.
I admit when I was running DSL and Puppy Linux on a chipped Xbox that was geeky.
Nowadays I install a flavour of Linux usually Linux Mint as its layout is similar to M$$$$soft on WinXP and Windows 7 machines for friends and neighbours,no one has complained yet and gone out and splashed the cash on a new PC,Linux has come a long way in a short time.
Open Source is the only free product I can think of that doesn't come with a hidden agenda.
For home use Linux stands head and above anything Microsoft has to offer,or the bundled packages that are shipped with it that gobble up system resources .I brindle at the memories of McAfee and Nero.
If you have a redundant machine collecting dust,it could be 10 years old,try a flavour of Ubuntu its only a 30 minute install off a CD or flashdrive,you might like it,at the very least with Kodi installed you have just made yourself a media centre.

Still to much geekin for many. I haven’t had a working PC at home for at least 18 months, phone does everything. Only use my work laptop because I need to.
