Yes due to the air -cooled R2800 ,several documented cases of 47 s getting home with cylinders shot out and actual holes in the prop blades!

Yea, Look Ma, not sensitive to ground fire damaged radiator or coolant lines feeding same !
Jug is one tough bird, just better at ground attack support than escorting the longer legged bombing aircraft missions with it`s much shorter range.

I like the saying from a P47 pilot. Want to impress your girl take a picture of yourself in front of a P51 if you wanted to come home to that girl fly a P47
There is a good documentary on the role of the P47 ground attack in WW2. It is called "A Fighter Pilot's Story."

You won't be disappointed if you ever get a chance to view it.

I've seen it. They showed it on PBS one time years ago. It is the best documentary on World War 2 that I've seen. There was a lot of different things shown and talked about that were like a gut punch. When his friends plane got hit at an altitude to low to bail out and looking up to wave goodbye as he went into the trees had me in tears.

Yes, it was a very personal account of war.

Yes, I was just notating it`s limitations when it was used for initial long range 8th air force bombing missions.
I fine very rugged ground support aircraft after the 8th finally realized to better assign it to the ground attack functions it was best suited for.
Plus, the Mustang came into service as the superior long range air-to-air interceptor.

The P51 did a lot of ground damage, too. Once released from bomber support on missions. :)

The aviators said that the 5-inch rockets were close to a 5-inch DDS shell, especially if they were diving on to the target. Eight of those, plus eight 50-cals, plus the diving speed of the P-47 is pretty awesome.
