Man, no kidding- and any of the rest of those quasi-arena bands whose lead singer sounded like he had just been kicked in the cods.

I'm getting a good giggle out of this thread. I'll be the first to admit that I bought many of the mentioned bands albums when they came out. That's okay...that was thirty plus years ago. What I don't want to admit is that I re-bought many of them on seedie in the 80's and 90's. What the hell was I thinking? Every once in awhile I'll drag one out...put it on and go Ewww!!! :yuck:
 
Add my vote for the Stones, but I'll push their shift into neutral back even earlier. Shattered and Miss You and Emotional Rescue are NOT up to the level of anything on Let It Bleed.

Might I add Nirvana? Cryptic and brooding is not the same as deep. It's just cryptic and brooding. Any depth you find there is your own reflection.

Let It Bleed was about the end for me as well for the Bones.

Oh no! I don't know if I can watch this thread! I love Nirvina. You should have seen me in the 90s. I had the long hair, the flanel shirts. I was quite the Grunger. Nirvana for sure, and STP. Never big on Pearl Jam after the first record. Kinda liked Alice In Chains though.

As for deep lyrics, I thougth Pennyroyal Tea was pretty deep. But I'm kinda moody.

As much as I personally think The Doors were a cut above the rest of the late-60's bands, even I don't think everything they did was great. Not by a long shot. Every band puts out clinkers every so often.

Gotta agree with most of what's been said, with qualifications...85% of the Dead, 50% of the Stones, 75% of the Who, 90% of The Boss, 50% of Led Zep, 50% of Pink Floyd oughta be deleted. Ditto for all hair bands (I watched a Motley Crue video on VH1 the other day and almost wet myself with embarrassment for them. Tommy Lee deserves his hepatitis). Guess I'm turning into quite the curmudgeon, but as a guy who is a little older than rock as a musical form, 90% of all rock/pop is pretty much forgettable...always has been. :sigh:
 
Elvis after he fired Scotty, Bill, and DJ. The Sun Sessions are one of my musical touchstones.
Okay, The Rolling Stones after Let It Bleed. But I still like Some Girls.
Seven Nation Army is a great song, but the White Stripes are uneven. Plus they're really just a Gories tribute band at heart.
Nevermind (except for the first song) is a great album (mostly due to Butch Vig's production), but most everything else by Nirvana is, um, not at such a high level.
I never thought Styx was highly-rated. I agree with the critics; they stunk, enough to make me forswear commercial radio for more than ten years, in the off chance that I might hear that awful whining.
The Strokes might be the worst band this side of the boy-band phenomenon.
Come to think of it, what has Bowie done in the last 23 years? I can think of precisely two songs that haven't been grot - Blue Jean and Under The God. He needs to hang out with Eno and live in Berlin and make some interesting records.
The Foo Fighters have a bad habit of making records with two good songs, and 10 bad ones.
 
Arright, here ya go, mainstreamers- John Mellencamp. A large minus in a broad field of neutrals. Never recorded anything worth more than lighter fluid and a match. And he moves on stage like a burning spastic.
