REM. To me they haven't released anything worth listening to in a long time. The rot set in when they released "Automatic For The People". Michael Stipe deserves a damn good kicking for unleashing that shite on the world.

OASIS. Another bunch of worthless and talentless idiots. They may be rockstars now but they are still only Pikies.


All these boy bands (westlife, blue etc) and girl bands (girls aloud, pussycat dolls etc.) and the even more annoying boy/girl bands (steps etc.). I really do wish they would crawl back under the stone they came from and die peacably. This is instantly forgettable stuff that many people will be ashamed to ever admit to listening to six months down the line.

I don't get the current wave of singer songwriters. Anthony & The Johnsons, Brighteyes, that Wainright fella, David Gray. Whilst I have nothing against singer songwriters per se I don't see the attraction in these. They are whiney, boring and provide nothing more than aural wallpaper. It seems to be a requirement now for them to be Gay which is fine, doesn't bother me but they insist on telling the world the fact.

I'm with ya, Trawlerman. I just grabbed REM's Green, which is one of the albums of my generation (I am 31) and I find it really sad they have been stalled for nearly 10 years. As for singer/songwriters, other than Anthony, it seems like the lot are all painting from the same pallette. Maximum appeal to the maximum amount of consumers. That stuff bores me as well.

hmmmmmmmmmm....tuff croud... led zeppilin over rated( u should be shot)...and if we think about music like hendrix. beatles. pink floyd. the dead..its like i tell my son. back in the day it was the sounds that they were make'n that we never heard before that caught our ears not really how good they were. and if u ever saw a pink floyd show live there is no one better at it ( and ive seen alot of bands live).. and out of the bands/ people that we have listed here may be overrated they all have that one two three maybe four songs that are really good. and thank goodness they put it out there.....x37tuna.........................................

I think if music videos had never arrived 95% of the bands from the 80's on would have never released a single, much less a whole album of their talentless crap. I agree with Henry. Maybe those old bands have been played to death or haven't done anything decent since their day but they at least did something notable once. What do I know though? Not much, I'm just an old geezer who went from the 40's to current and find some good in most of it. Although it's getting a lot harder to find every year. No wonder the daily tunes posts contain so many posts of unheard of artists. Most of the name bands of today don't make it. I listened to a Canadian radio station and never heard of most of the Canadian artists they played, yet they sounded better to me than any of today's so called mainstream bands. If you turn on a pop radio station you hear over modulated white noise. No rhythm or harmony. I wonder if I'm the only one who gets real tired of attitude. I feel better now so have you way with me

Well evryone covered most of the bands i was thinking about. But what I really don't understand is how can some of these bands (groups) possibly have a "Greatest Hits" CD after only 2 releases.

FWIW: I'll pick on:

the Rolling Stones: sure, they were the bomb in the '70s, but have ridden on the coattales of their '70s cataloge ever since. Definately resting on their laurels.

U2 is an easy target. Song writing has been a srtong point with these guys IMO, but the notion that they were rock-n-roll saviours back in the '80s was ridiculous. Besides, Bono is a dick.

Bruce Springsteen - I actually like on or two of his albums; he Wild, The Innocent, & The E-street Shuffle is prolly one of my all time favorite albums. But people want to deify the guy, and Hyfi is right. His voice has never been a strong suit and he plays hamfisted guitar (so does Little Steven or whatever his name is). His songs are usually interesting, but people make them out to be so profound and important. Why?

Sting - He's as pretentious as Bono and as insufferable as the man he's become to resemble in his old age, Dr. Zaccary Smith from Lost In Space. If he hadn't been a member of another slightly overblown group, the Police, me may have never released more than one or two albums.

But Ledzep and Floyd over-rated? hhhmmm....I don't think so.
Put either group back together and put them on tour and they'd sell out the world over. Not what I'd call over-rated, considering neither groups has put out an album in 30 years.

While my personal tastes agree with alot of the bands that were mentioned, I also think that with one song (Teen Spirit) Nirvana wiped out :deadhorse a decade (the 80's) of horrible heavy metal ballad bands. Thank God!!!

Wipe out crap with more crap... I'm not sure what's worse!

Metallica (died in '86 with Cliff Burton. AJFA was a fairly weak effort by them, the black album was the most overrated album of all time and Load and everything since downright sucked).

U2 (they suck and they get all this attention like they dont)

Dave Matthews (cant write songs, not original just takes stuff from different people nobody has ever heard of)

Nirvana (they get famous because mainstream had already sucked as much as anything could suck until these guys came along and proved it could suck even more. As if Motley Crue already didn't lack talent badly enough, these guys thrived on no talent. Kurt Cobain dies, so does the band, and people quickly begin to forget they ever existed).

Slayer (all we ever needed from them was Reign in Blood. Everything else was weak in comparison and they got old real fast)

Van Halen (the first album was great... but what the hell happened after that?)

Pearl Jam (none of them have died yet, but we wouldn't miss them if they did)

AC/DC (they are okay, but they are definitely not worth all the fuss)

Motley Crue (how much three cord lack of creativity and cheese can you fit into a song?)

Poison (they suck too - somebody explain to me how Bret Michaels gets around so much? If I looked that feminine, all women would think I am gay... oh wait he probably told them all that he is gay and wants to see what sex with a woman feels like)

Queen (as if the name wasnt enough!)

Prince (... do I really need to explain?)

The Beatles (not the biggest fan or anything, but they took rock to new audiences all over the world. I mean to date for what's out there they are still overrated, but they earned some of it)

I think what people are doing is mixing the definition of talent and importance. Most of those bands named so far have shaped the music industry while supremely talented bands have generally sat back and done their art thing. Before this discussion can take place, you have to qualify what most overrated is. I doubt that you will find a single person who thinks the Stones are the most talented Rock band, but hoards of people will call them the greatest.
