Most overrated band

My generation would disown me but personally I agree with Nirvana being overrated to me personally. It is claimed that they brought grunge and to an extent punk into the mainstream in the 1990s. To me they have one or two good songs which primarily are overplayed and extremely played out at this point. The wife is a big fan, I have heard all of there music and Just am not impressed. Than again its really hard to pinpoint the main topic on this thread since everything boils down to personal preference.

Every band that gets the "best" attribute by the masses is logically also the most overrated out there. Becoming the best means you need more "fake" fans drawn in the collective whirlpool than "real" fans that discovered you directly.

I know die hard fans of Pink Floyd that have all the bestseller albums (DSOTM, The Wall, Wish You Were Here) and giant wall posters yet they cant tell the instruments apart. Yes, they think the boom of Roger Waters' bass guitar is actually the foot pedal of Nick Mason hitting the Ludwig bass drum.

Now by discovered directly what exactly do you mean? Its kind of hard to discern between a real fan and not etc and this in an of itself sparks so so much contention between fans and listeners particularly between todays generation. Look at the massive split between true fans of Ronnie Radke formerly of Escape The Fate, and todays ETF fans that have zero clue who he even is.

The vast majority of modern "mainstream" bands.

Every UK band HAS to sound like Mumford and Sons, or some equally insipid "indie" rock (no longer proper indie ) band.

Nirvana nevermind was a classic.

Pink Floyd upto the wall were great, beyond not.

Beatles....massively over-rated.

Grateful dead , Toto, Journey, .sadly I never "got" a lot of bands that were massive in the USA.

Rush were and are a phenomenon , but some of their albums are tripe.

Tony Orlando and Dawn. Melodic , yes. Vapid, yes.
Well, you've really got to go back to when they were just "Dawn", before the corporate masters decided that Tony Orlando should be put out front by calling the "Tony Orlando and Dawn". It totally destroyed their integrity as serious artists. (sarcasm)

I can only speak to bands that were around in my lifetime, and with that in mind my vote goes to Pearl Jam. Seriously...one good record (Vs.), one decent record (Vitalogy), and a bunch of mediocre crap.
I thought Ten was their only worthwhile album, but I admit, I didn't explore too far past it. I'll have to re-listen to Vs and Vitalogy.
I do not get why everyone still creams themselves whenever a new U2 record is released when the band hasn't made a good album/
fixed that for ya. Good call on U2. Anyone who would name themselves "Beautiful Voice" (Bono Vox) can't be taken seriously. I think Lux Interior got it right with the rock-n-roll self naming.

The Ramones: maybe you haven't heard their first 2 albums.
Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, but I just don't see what the Ramones were doing as something of value. I was into hardcore at the time (Black Flag, Fear, L.A.'s Wasted Youth, Deep Wound, The Germs, etc.). To me they sounded like a bunch of misfit bubble-gummers. I didn't and still don't see any greatness in their teenie-bopper rebellion. Maybe someday it'll be more obvious to me. I do make a point of trying things I don't like every so-often to see if anything has changed. (I eat olives now for this reason)

Directly is a bit loose term, I agree. I meant it like in a scenario where I hear a song and I like it, either over the radio or TV or Youtube. If someone recommends it doesn't mean I became a fake fan because of the recommendation. But when I read reviews and praises that claim "legendary", "cult" and "epic" virtues of a band and I go for it and train myself to like their music without any proper critical filter, I'd say I've been hoarded to join the fan herd.

Reason for this is the need to belong, to garnish one self with "coolness" (socially acceptable behavioral patterns). You can read more about this animal behavior in Behavioral Psychology and the works of Gabriel Tarde (Imitation).

Becoming a fan for any other reason than personally preferring the musical aesthetics because of who we are (and have become) as a person in life, I'd say you are one of the many who help the band become overrated. "You" as in imaginary you. We've all done this, it comes natural to us with our gregarious instincts.

To me personally The Beatles come #1 in being overrated.

I can agree with that, I personally fall into both catagories on a lot of different artists and bands mostly due to how we grow as people and as we age. Bands back in highschool that I made a connection with or would have considered myself a true fan of have fallen a bit by the wayside as i listen to them now 5 years later etc.

The Beatles. Listening to their work now and it's painfully obvious that most of their critical acclaim was due to the reverential idol worship that surrounded them back then. At best most of it is good albiet self indulgent pop music with a few gems to be found here and there.

I agree with you, plus The Monkeys had a way bigger following

Nirvana
There were other bands doing that music better when they hit.
I never got it.

PS-Ramones for the same reason mentiond above.

Regarding Pink FLoyd. No, they are not overrated. A great group. I can understand how one might not like them. But their body of work is excellent as reflected by their popularity.

Overrated is garbage like Justin Bieber.

I would argue that an overrated band is going to be a has been in 5 to 10 years, i.e., Justin Bieber.

A great band (that some do and others don't like) that is not overrated will be popular years from their initial success.

^This.

Overrated means wait who? in 5 years time. If people are still buying the music and listening decades after, it's a sign they are good.

Lots of Nirvana hating, I don't think they are overrated, just maybe way too famous because he blew his head off, the craze didn't really get started till after that.

I'm with ya on the olives. I couldn't stomache them until I was in my mid 30's. I forced myself to keep trying them and now I love'em.
