Motorcycle with no baffles.

I got no idea where you get this from.

Everyday I go out into the world I encounter bad behavior and it is just plain accepted as "the way it is". When I sit at a stop light there will inevitably be some jacka$s with a loud car stereo making it impossible for me to think. Is it "his right" to send out noise pollution so that everyone else has to listen to it? I say no. There are laws that say that kind of behavior is not acceptable but they are not enforced. Just last night as I was reading this thread I heard a very loud motorcycle rip by my apartment. We are just supposed to accept this behavior because some motorcyclists say that it is OK.

The thing is you don't ask the person doing said behavior if it is OK or not. They will always say that it is fine. There has to be some set of standards of behavior because we live in a society. Without any standards you just have anarchy. I hear people complaining about how "their rights are being chipped away" but how about the rights of others? Do I not have the right to exist in society without listening to what you think is "acceptable noise"? Since when are you the sole determiner of what is right and what is wrong. Society makes those decisions as a whole. That is exactly why we have laws. If you don't like those laws you can call your representative in Congress (or whatever).

While I agree to some extent that people are assholes, I have to say that the biggest problem with today's entitlement society is that they believe they are entitled to not be offended. They want to make illegal any behavior they find offensive and rely upon "authorities" to enforce such regulations. The problem with this is that virtually everything offends someone, and it's a slippery slope to ending up in a world where everything is illegal. A society of tattle telling cowards made cuckolds by their own tyranny.

Live and let live.

I guess we're all a little different about what we'll tolerate or not..

I get loud bikes going by my house every now and then... No deal. Mine is loud too, besides, it's only for a few seconds..

A car with a loud stereo pulls up next to me.. No deal, I just turn mine up louder so I can hear mine. It's only a few at a stop light..

Someone wears too much perfume... So what... I move to somewhere else... Same if someone farts in my general direction.

Someone wants to come up and talk to me when I'm not in a talking mood, no deal.. I either say that, or make an excuse to leave..

We aren't alone in this world... We can't all be expected to give up what we like or want, but we also can't all be pissed off when someone is doing something we don't like... We all need to be a little more tolerant.

Life is too short to spend your time worrying about what others are doing that you don't like or agree with... Live and let live. The world would be a lot happier place if more people tried it.

It's a huge list... My rights are always being chipped away... because people are too busy worrying about what others do, and what offends them, and they don't deal with their life.

How about looking at it from the other side? Maybe if people considered what their actions mean to other people more then we wouldn't need those pesky rules. If fast food chains cared that drowning their fries in lard was killing people and changed it, it wouldn't have to be legislated. If food manufacturers (odd term, huh?) cared that adding so much salt was leading to high blood pressure and heart disease then we wouldn't need rules about it. And if people with loud motorcycles cared that they are disturbing others then maybe there wouldn't be rules about it.

Maybe if we put others ahead of ourselves sometimes...well, just maybe.

If people were responsible for their own health, then they wouldn't eat so many fries.. not like the place is forcing them down their throat... Why keep me safe? I can make up my own mind, then deal with my own consequences. No need to pass a law about it.. .

Same goes with salt... i can choose not to eat at places that use a lot of salt so they sell more beer, but I like beer...

I guess in VA they don't care that other people are bothered by loud bikes, cause we have no laws about how loud they can or can't be... or maybe the people of the state (sorry, COMMONWEALTH) really don't worry about it since no one has been able to get enough votes to make it an issue...

Maybe if people lived and let live a little better than they do, they would also think about others a little more, but people like myself are so tired of being told what to do, how to act, what to eat, what not to eat who to hang out with or who not to, that we decide we're just going to do what we want to do because we're sick of all the :bs: and it's our only way to retaliate.. .

I don't care what you eat, or how you act - but put a muffler on your ass-clown bike.

Nope, just not going to do something to appease someone who will never see me or hear me riding by. My choices effect them in no way, and yet they still feel the need to tell someone what to do... That's why things have gotten so bad.. everyone wants to ru(i)n everyone else's lives, even when others in no way affect theirs, yet they don't worry about their own life and fixing what is wrong with them...

...

But your riding a loud motorbike does affect others as is made amply evident by some of the responses in this thread.

That's why things have gotten so bad.. everyone wants to ru(i)n everyone else's lives, even when others in no way affect theirs, yet they don't worry about their own life and fixing what is wrong with them...

How do you draw the conclusion that those who seek to legislate public civility don't worry about their own lives or know how to deal with their problems? Run me through your reasoning.

Come on Tom.. all it takes is opening up a new paper (or the web) and reading for about 10 minutes... I won't get into all the scandals of all the people who impose all their morals onto the general public.. we have another forum for that.. But as a quick example, the guy looking to ban large soda also has a building where he gives away free junkfood (and good food) and soda (as much as they want) to the people who work in his building.. (a minor example but just point that people don't clean their own closet before they look to clean others)

This really has kinda gotten off track, but it's still all the same thing... People all want their personal space, but yet they get upset when someone encroaches theirs, but normally they are encroaching others just as much... Tolerance goes just as far as compassion... they should both play out equal... but they never do...

There are some responses in this thread that show that there are people in the world who really don't care what others think or how their actions affect others. I do not blast music from my car and I am offended when others do so. Why is this? Because we share a common space and loud music like that is not music anymore, it is plain and simple noise pollution. Actions have consequences and driving is a privilege not a right. If you abuse the privilege there are consequences like fines for having a motorcycle that is too loud. If you are willing to pay the fines then more power to you I guess. But you shouldn't expect others to just accept the loud noise because it is OK with you. What if I came to your neighborhood and woke you up in the middle of the night every day? Would you "just accept it" or would you be pissed off? My guess is the latter. You would not be a happy camper.

If we go back to the original post for this thread I would honestly recommend to the OP that he call the cops and tell them when this guy goes blasting through his neighborhood. If he regularly comes through at a certain time then maybe they could have a cop be there and write a ticket. I wouldn't have any issue with that at all because the guy is breaking the law. The only real slippery slope here is the one where we start saying that it is OK to break this law but not others. If it is OK for someone to annoy the hell out of me with loud pipes or loud music then why shouldn't I be able to annoy the hell out of them by say dumping my trash in the street in front of their house? Why shouldn't they just accept that as the way things are? Also in fact the OP says that the guy blasts through his neighborhood with the throttle wide open so that the noise is pretty much maxed out. Why doesn't that individual have an obligation to not pollute the neighborhood with his noise? The answer is of course that he does have an obligation to not be an as$hole because he is a member of society. If that person wants to go off and buy an island and start his own society then he may do as he pleases. But that is just not the case.

And we aren't talking about soda laws here. We are talking about laws designed to prevent noise pollution. There is a difference. Motorcycles aren't the only thing targeted in these laws. You can't just crank your stereo at your home so loud each and every day until the neighbors complain. It is the same thing, an effort to regulate the sounds around us so that one person doesn't have the ability to affect others in a completely negative way.

What may be noise pollution to one person may be art to another.... I personally love the sound of a nice loud deep throaty sounding engine... whether it's a bike a car, a jake brake, or a steam engine...

As far as loud music from a car.. .most times I like what's playing, and I like loud music... soooooooo.....

As far as having the cops waiting to catch someone with a loud pipe for you, they really have more important things to do, plus in my state, as much as they would like, they can't write me a ticket for my pipes being too loud..... And also like I said, here in DC< the cops have far from stock baffles in their bikes, so it makes it kinda hard for them to write me a ticket for the same thing they are doing.

Having so many laws that we are unable to enforce them all seems to be a pretty good indication that we have too many laws.

I personally do not care what others think of me, outside of work and social settings.

I also don't generally try to be an asshole, I do my best to treat my neighbors the way I would want to be treated. I could call the cops on them every time they throw a party or inconvenience me (we have a lot of laws, after all, I can find them violating one or more of them pretty easily.) It would be my legal right to do so. It would also make me the asshole, not them.

Some of the posters seem to miss the irony in their golden rule type responses. A little bit of tolerance goes a long way.

I like the sound of a good engine also. I just don't want to hear it all of the time in my neighborhood going full blast. The operator has the ability to tone things down by not going WOT all of the time. With freedom comes responsibility. That seems to be the part that is lacking with some people.

As far as loud music from a car.. .most times I don't like what is playing. Yet I can't do anything about it unless I am willing to go up and knock on their car window and tell them to STFU. So I am forced to listen to their (c)rap music which often times revolves around the F word being repeated endlessly. If they want to hear some good music I could treat them to a little Jimi Hendrix listened to at moderate volume. They won't have any hearing in a few years anyway listening at those SPLs.

The only thing that I am really arguing for is moderation and a bit of empathy and/or compassion for others. It really isn't that hard to do. If you are out on the open highway then I say let that throttle rip. But if you are in a neighborhood is it so hard to simply throttle down and show some respect for the neighbors? I don't think so. And then you might actually meet some cool people that think you are alright as well.

And as to PickyEars81 response, if you know the neighbors and they tell you ahead of time that they are going to throw a party then that is a different issue. If however they throw a party on a Sunday night and you have to get up at 6 AM to take your son to school I would not be cool with that and I would have no problem calling the cops. That would not make me an as$hole, only a law abiding citizen exercising my rights. Tolerance is one thing but there are some things that don't deserve to be tolerated. Would you tolerate me taking a dump in the street in front of your house every day? I don't think so. At some point we have laws for a reason, because it is what is best for the majority. That is simply how a society operates.

Not to many, I'd wager. Nor do I confuse what's pleasurable to what's artistic. Given that I think novelty and intention are needed for the creation of art I don't consider the noise generated by machinery artistic. Sometimes it's pleasurable.

In any event I won't buy the argument that obnoxious behavior becomes non obnoxious when it's art.
