MS Update

I just checked for updates for MS XP Pro, and it came back with "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1" update, Download size: 248.4 MB , 32 hours 25 minutes !

Is this update something that is needed for home use?

No idea really, but I have SP2 and have never done any other updates. I don't use Internet Explorer, use Firefox, have AVG free, Spybot and Zone Alarm free. No problems in years of use.

My Vista ( :yuck: ) machine just received that update a few days ago. I'm not sure of the size but it took about and hour to download and install it, even with a medium speed broadband connection

That plus other recent server update "roll-ups" totaled about 2 gigs last week. Took over a day with our slow-boat DSL at the office; downright unrealistic.

You absolutely need broadband these days if you want to keep Windows up to date. Unless you use some software that needs .NET, it shouldn't matter. I generally don't install optional updates unless something requires them.

What type of programs use the .net?

As there is no high speed available where I live, I usually download the large upgrades at a high speed connection, and install them later.

I tried that myself and downloaded the entire 248MB executable and installed it, hoping to keep it on file in case I needed to reinstall it in the future and avoid going through the Windows Update BS. Rebooted, went to Windows Update, and it said that I still needed to update! :gigglemad What a PITA!

Here's a look at .NET: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.NET_Framework If you need an update to .NET, then WU has found that there's at least one program on your PC that needs it.

Last night I loaded Windows 7 and it loaded on my old (really old) Compaq N610c. Vista would not even start. Windows installed and ran rather well and while not as fast as XP it was not unacceptable. Other than some graphics intensive apps and then it was showing the graphics card age. It even recognized the Linksys wireless card without having to add drivers. Vista could not do it when I tried the card on my Vista machine, neither could XP without the drivers nor any Linux distribution. The Compaq if not using graphics intensive programs will suffice.

This morning the internet would not work and nothing I did could get it going so rip the OS out. Was going to install either XP Home or XP Professional as I have both when I spied my copy of 2000 Professional. Oh, what the heck. I loaded it and it did take a little to get the wireless card recognized. The laptop did not have 2000 as an offered OS but the XP drivers worked. I even located my MS Office 97 and Coral 2000 Office discs and loaded them in. Updated the 2000 to SP4 and 1st surprise. The disc spaced used was less than 1/2 of just the Win7 OS. Speed makes the XP Home feel like a slug and the Win7 is intolerable in comparison.

None of the updates including from SP2 to SP4 were anything like 248 megs. I did have to go through a sereis of download, update, restart and then update again but it all went fast even using the b wireless. Now that everythign is installed I'll thry to install my g adaptor.
There must have been a reason I moved up from 2000 Professional but on the Compaq, it is here to stay. It is faster than either my Vista machine or XP laptop.

Yep, I have W 2000 on an old P2 450 Mhz machine with Office 97, runs fine, faster than my new machine with XP and Office 97.

Same here. I've got W2K on a PII 350 and a PIII 500. Performance isn't anything to brag about, but it's relatively stable, totally usable for Office '97 and Autocad 2000 which are the only things I run on it. And not too much Office. I use my Mackbook for everything else. (Wish I could get Autocad on my Mac, I guess I have to get Parallels and stick XP on it...)
