Music that shows speakers weakness

I never broke a cartridge but the record did pop my ADC-XLM equipped Thorens arm up in the air. With the Thorens a V-15 tracked it well though.

So nobody got my canon joke? I'm the only guy here that went to Catholic school?

I never had my ADC-XLM throw in the towel, but I ran a pretty low mass arm (Black Widow) in those days.

I'm not Catholic, but our High School was right across the street from the local Catholic High School. That must have had something to do (Proximity Effect?) with the fact that I got the Blasting Canons/Heresy connection.

I'll have to throw in my two cents for organ recordings. The sheer "density" of the sound really can show up a speaker with damping or excursion-limitation problems ANYWHERE in the sonic range.

One in particular, that can sound AMAZING on a RIGHT speaker (i.e, one without damping/excursion/ringing issues), but pretty terrible on many "common" speakers, is the Dorian recording of "Pictures at an Exhibition", played by Jean Guillou:

Get that to sound right, and you're probably a LONG way toward having a good sounding speaker. On many, it'll start to sound "congested" or "boomy" in the midbass... due to either a lack of midbass damping, a lack of midbass excursion (leading to distortion), or un-flat response in the bass/midbass region. FWIW, most Tannoys tend to do well on this track... they do seem to, for the most part, have very good midbass/bass tuning...

The Package by A Perfect Circle off of the CD Thirteenth Step. I've brought some very highly touted speakers to their knees with the bass and dynamics of this track.

Yes, this track, as well as many others from this CD, has definitely seperated the good from the great in my collection.

Also, just about anything off of The Raconteurs "Consolers of the Lonely". Mixed to brutal perfection with the levels a little hot and spans the entire frequency spectrum. A comprehensive mix of instrumentation both acoustic and electric...heavily distorted and wonderfully pure acoustic guitar and bass, crystal clear horns, piano, organ, incredible drums (that snare...WOW!), violin, complex vocal layering, very little enhancing or polishing of the acoustic instruments and with plenty of brash guitar and organ that will quickly distort if your mids and highs aren't up to the task.

Also Steely Dan's latest "Everything Must Go" is another one that is mixed to brutal perfection with the levels a little hot...especially the low end. The woofers on my Klipsch KG5.5's look like they're having a epileptic seizure for the majority of the album (er, uh...CD) and the horns sounded like crap reproducing the upper mids and highs until I swapped in the Crites titanium drivers. I wouldn't dare crank this CD with the "Loudness" engaged on my Carver.

I'm fixin' to upgrade the crossovers on my new L100t's to T3 specs and these two CD's will certainly reveal how effective the upgrade is.

Norman's the man! That bass note that repeats throught the song at the start of each measure is a thumper for sure. It gets my AR2ax speakers to thump down to their 40 Hz rating and when I take it to my system with the Velodyne sub, it seems to dig even deeper down to 30 or lower.

The "Interstellar" soundtrack is a very dangerous recording. It is going to ruin a lot of speakers. Played through my Yamaha NS-500M s and my Yamaha NS-1000 s simultaneously with the watt meter barely registering 10 it shakes everything. Awesome and scary.
