New music doesn't all suck, does it?

Here’s the original song for those interested. The whole album is exceptional Imo though.

Pretty nice. Just for the record, that second piece is a fairly direct lift of Bill Evans' "Peace Piece, " which he also used as an introduction occasionally to a beautiful jazz standard he liked to perform, " Young and Foolish. "

I've listened to some of the links in this thread, but nowhere near the majority of them, and tried to do so with an open mind. In another thread, I attempted to go into detail about what appeals and speaks to me about the music to which I gravitate. I have to admit I can't make it through more than a few seconds of the majority of links here so far, for the reasons I previously detailed in another thread.

Out of sincere curiosity and a desire to find something I'm missing, perhaps posting specifics about why one enjoys the links one posts would be helpful and interesting. That may very devolve into a "what constitutes good music" thread, and I DO NOT want that.

Back story.. I have a very, VERY talented, intelligent, and proficient son who, in addition to being an excellent classical pianist, is also involved in recording, writing, and performing music that crosses over into certain realms of metal, and he is hurt by the fact that I can't enjoy some of it. It isn't because I lack appreciation for the skill involved, but rather an aversion to sounds that strike me negatively and/or artificially assembled productions.

Part of me would like to hear what many of you hear in some this music... And many parts of me, admittedly, are glad I do not.

Thoughts?

I am 57
I totally dig what you are saying as I am not into typically angry songs or swear filled rap, but I do like older god smack songs when I found them as its just cool to rock out to. I think it was their first album that had some great songs to rock out to that I just find fun and play them louder the better. I find them not to too much and just enough edge to be fun

This is pretty much my limit of heavy metal, and all these are pretty good tunes from 97 album
although not my normal music this album grew on me surprisingly quick.

you really need speakers with great impact and some volume to appreciate the bass lines.

4 and 6 (if you open in you tube its full album) I just find fun and cool tunes and they have great impact with some volume to rock out to. Surprisingly One of very few albums I can listen to every song

8 and 11 you might like

A closed mind will never move forward. I am not a fan of classical at all , I closed myself off to it all my life . A couple weeks ago I was recommended a song that had good bass extension, turned out to be a classical tune and I actually found it refreshing and liked it.

Do you remember what the tune was? I might be able to recommend some additional works with some appeal to you...

Anything with a large organ is likely to give you more bass extension than you will know what to do with... Especially played in a cathedral; I sat in on evensong in Winchester cathedral a couple of weeks ago, and you could feel the entire air mass in the nave moving.

It got me thinking that I'd love to see this played in a cathedral, with organ and choir (it's not 'new music', though; more 'modern classical')

It's OK. I really don't like the shreddie stuff. I prefer the crunchy stuff ...

.
Not new music.... or even close to that, but intriguing. This is one of those bands that I feel like I need to acquire some of their stuff (I'm not yet a streamer type) and spend some time with it. Some years ago I got really into the whole Krautrock thing and started digging lots of Can, Kraftwerk and a few other things like that from the 70s. I like the really creative, far-outside-the-box approach that these bands had. They all surely have some influences and yet none of them seemed like they patterned their sound very closely on anything else...

I noticed that also , I also hear some Miles Davis Flamingo Sketches in the song Fix It

I use Quobuz and find new to me stuff all the time. My recent find was "Blackberry Smoke", an established band with a history that I've never heard of before.

Yes it was this one. Warning!! Anyone that sees this and plays it on your system do so at your own risk because there are big dynamic passages that can blow your woofers.

"Flamenco Sketches," from "Kind of Blue?" I didn't notice, but confess I've been doing mostly "drop the needle" listening trying to get through this thread...I'll check it out again.

Interesting aside...the liner notes on "Kind of Blue" attributed to Bill Evans get the descriptions of Flamenco Sketches and All Blues backwards, stating that Flamenco Sketches is "a 6/8 12-measure blues form..." and that All Blues is "a series of five scales, each to be played as long as the soloist wishes..."

That's backwards. The tunes are also listed in the wrong order on the album, at least on the Columbia PC 8163 vinyl I have. All Blues is the first tune on the B side, followed by Flamenco Sketches.

That is a FANTASTIC recording and performance. Glad to hear you enjoyed it!

If you liked that, try this...although it was written earlier, it's a pretty exciting sonic ride too, and the Telarc bass drum is put to very good use in the finale "The Great Gate of Kiev" at the end of "Pictures." I do wish they had indexed the second work into more than just one 30:16 track...:(

Ty Segall did a cover of it. And Ty is great but I like the original slightly better. Something new, something old. But all that shred stuff, all that hair band stuff, fuhgeddaboudit. Speaking of old/new, kraut, etc., I heard this a few months ago and thought it was a new band. Nope - Coldplay borrowed the riff.

That’s very interesting I did not know that, I wonder if it was done on purpose as you know Bill Evans was known for doing his music in an unorthodox way.
