New music doesn't all suck, does it?

It would be interesting to hear what trips your trigger with respect to good music. Knowing that, I might be able to suggest something that interests you?
Very simple, a great melody. It's as if people have simply run out of new melodies. When i hear one of the new songs I tell my wife, "that's gotta be one of the current hits, right? as that's a piss poor melody"
Pick any Gino Vannelli song, the Beatles, etc. There's a simple reason they will keep playing songs from the mid 60's to the late 70's on the radio, it's because of how good the melodies are.

The only time I hear autotune is when a college station has to stick in some rap (a requirement of the FCC). Then you'll hear guys alternate between tough guy rapping and wimpy autotune whining. Each situation is different. I get that.

LOL, the FCC joke was beautifully deadpan. You really sent the finger waggers off on a hunt.

You guys bashing rap in a new music thread realize it's been around since the seventies, right?

This was true until Rick Rubin got a hold of it.

It's just the normal old dudes bashing anything that came after their time. It's always been that way and will never change.

There is some limited truth to this. When you are younger, many more things are new, so the notion you are on to a hot new trend is laughed at by guys that heard it before. The guys that knew Vanilla Ice onehit was "borrowed" from Under Pressure versus the kids that thought this new guy did this dope amazing lick.

Then the guys step in that knew Under Pressure's history if you don't.

We lost the space to say "hold on kid, that sucks, listen to ____" and be right because we have the music history to back it up. This WAS the place where old guys taught the new guys about music, and occasionally the new kids introduced something new to keep the feedback loop moving.

Supposedly this is rap. But it sounds like music so I like it.

.

Thanks for that. I liked it and ordered the CD (Raw Like Sushi). Amazon says delivery tomorrow.

ok. i saw what you posted and knew i wouldn't like it but i gave it a chance and lasted 40 seconds.

will you give this 40 seconds?

I couldn't get past 29 seconds. The emoting from the vocalist (not singing to me) was enough. I generally stay away from anything with repulsive cover art.

Well, I gave it another shot. I made it to 43 seconds.

So, I gave you the 40 seconds. To quote PopEye, "That's all I can stands, I can't stands no more".

What I heard was truly awful to me. A large part of Hell for me would be being forced to listen to such stuff.

Some people are born old and gripe about what used to be and some of us just like to discover new music and enjoy. For those who like to discover, a little Tommy Emmanuel.
Exquisite. A true guitar virtuoso.

Not much new about it, though.

LOL, the FCC joke was beautifully deadpan. You really sent the finger waggers off on a hunt.
The other side of rap is that internet streams are not regulated by the FCC. So you could be listening to some rap song and all of a sudden POW !!! there's bad swearing. There's this station out of the University of Zagreb that does that a lot. They're Croatians, so they're not gonna offended.

I've listened to some of the links in this thread, but nowhere near the majority of them, and tried to do so with an open mind. In another thread, I attempted to go into detail about what appeals and speaks to me about the music to which I gravitate. I have to admit I can't make it through more than a few seconds of the majority of links here so far, for the reasons I previously detailed in another thread.

Out of sincere curiosity and a desire to find something I'm missing, perhaps posting specifics about why one enjoys the links one posts would be helpful and interesting. That may very devolve into a "what constitutes good music" thread, and I DO NOT want that.

Back story.. I have a very, VERY talented, intelligent, and proficient son who, in addition to being an excellent classical pianist, is also involved in recording, writing, and performing music that crosses over into certain realms of metal, and he is hurt by the fact that I can't enjoy some of it. It isn't because I lack appreciation for the skill involved, but rather an aversion to sounds that strike me negatively and/or artificially assembled productions.

Part of me would like to hear what many of you hear in some this music... And many parts of me, admittedly, are glad I do not.

Thoughts?

Opining that the Neneh (sp?) Cherry thing's kinda lame (but B for effort) ain' trashing "rap" or Hip-Hop, etc., which has been sorta around since the late 1970s. Anyway, who could bash "rap" when ya got sumthin' like this yo:

Nuttin' wrong with Biggie, here's something more palatable to give him one more chance...

The groove is ridiculous in this band.. check out the bass solo and following drum breaks around 4:00. Alvaro (the drummer) and bassist are KILLIN'. Tight, incredibly rhythmically precise, interesting chords, voicings, suspensions, intricate, infectious, and uplifting...

Same here. I didn't care for everything here but I struggle to see how someone couldn't enjoy at least a couple. Lots of genres represented. We must have very different tastes in music.
I WILL try.. going back through thread now... Found a couple..
