New Separates from Line Magnetic...

Maybe some of you guys would love to own some that gear but in my opinion some of it starts looking too industrial looking and over kill in size. I like the more small pieces by LM. And I've never been a horn guy nor did I like all that Western Electric theater speaker stuff nor the theater audio gear either....to industrial looking.

choices are good.

I love 'industrial looking'. I'll take meters over digital readouts any day.
A lot of newer stuff looks lifeless to me. No personality. Boring. Safe. Neutered.

Don't get me wrong- I like a lot of modern looking audio gear too. Some of it even more so than the 'industrial' looking pieces that I love.
Good design is good design, doesn't matter how old or new it is.

I'm just thankful there's companies who share my love for 'industrial looking' and continue to follow that design que. I'm also happy there's those who are pushing in the other direction with more modern designs for those who prefer that.
Even if I didn't like the 'industrial look', I'd applaud LM for going against the grain and swimming upstream.

As for size- I can go either way. But if I'm looking at something pleasing to the eye, I can't imagine thinking "I wish there was less of it". Boobs come to mind :D

I think it`s cool that they are offering these products. Some retro some modern and for myself looks, build quality and of course sound, with sound and build quality being at the top have all been important to me. They seem to have something for all tastes.

I`m saving up for the 518IA. Any owners of the 518IA or 218IA that would like to share their experience with the amps?

Hi RH67, FWIW, I bought a 518IA couple weeks ago and I'm enjoying it very much. It's doing a wonderful job driving my KEF LS50. On paper it may not be the best match but for my small room and listening preferences, it's a great match and I can't ask for anything more. Sound is spooky real and lifelike, typical of most 845 based amps. Build quality is superb and I think it looks damn nice as well. So far, rolled some Gold Lion KT77 driver tubes and Brimar CV4035 input tubes and they've made a nice improvement over the stock tubes.

Bottom line is it's great amp and I think you'll be quite happy with it. What speakers are planning on using it with?

Some obligatory pics....

This is the amplifier I heard on a pair of Devore Orangutans. It was quite inpressive!

Thanks for the report. I have Klipsch Forte speakers, they work very well with tube amps.

I was able to audition the amp for a short time, there was an emotional and physical connection to the music of which i have not heard or felt in quite awhile. Recorded music is recorded music but the 518 did a good job at presenting a realistic presentation of what is heard live.

I just needed some conformation of what i heard as i was blown away, so thanks.

RJ 755 -

Sweet set-up and I bet it sounds quite good - And the KEF drivers almost match the gold face plate of the amp perfectly. I have their DAC and the gold finish is very nice indeed.

RH67 - Completely agree with you....this amp makes music sound so alive.

Guys, appreciate the nice comments on my setup...still learning and tweaking as I go along.

All the best, Raj

You just ordered the LM DAC and took delivery of the amp...I'd say that your goal of downsizing isn't going well...:D.

Looks like great stuff...!

Being involved in audio since the 60`s it takes quite a bit to get me fired up, the 518 knocked me for a loop, the only other recent amp is the AR Reference 150 at more than double the price.

Quick question on the 518 VU meter. I know that it is active when biasing.

However, during normal playback, does the VU meter work and show power output or is it inert except for voltage during biasing?

I know that the 219 has three separate meters - two for biasing, and one showing watts it is putting out. I thought perhaps the 518's single meter can be doing double duty...

Thanks,
UL
