@damacman, I’m not sure if you’re talking about the sound from your shop’s multi pairs of Bose 901s here—powered by multiple MC2600s and MC2500s—or that from one of your other big boss systems, but I experienced putting smiles on the faces of and getting to dance enthusiastically thousands and thousands of people when I had my mobile disco (with two pairs of 901s powered by two PL400IIs), back in the late ’70s and early ’80s.
It’s one of the reasons this hobby first interested and has still sustained me. Sure, back then, a few people rolled their eyes at my 901s (including a friend with Altec Model 19s), as well as plenty of people who equated big sound with big speaker size.
Clearly, there’s truth there. (Having Klipschorns now, I’m currently a subscriber.) But, more often than not, my 901s got compliments from people who were very happily surprised that not only did the 901s provide big, full, slamming, bass-filled, clean sound, but that they weren’t distorted and shouty and harsh and annoying—like so many of the big, loud black box PA horn systems most mobile DJs provided.
Probably my (and the 901’s) biggest compliment was from Sun Ra and his Arkestra, for whom I, with only a hour or so’s warning, had to mic and provide the light and sound at a dance concert he performed at my small private college. Sun Ra said it was the best sound and most fun he’d ever had. Granted, it was an art school where people sometimes danced nude, and he was more than a little stoned. Still (since it’s possible he was usually stoned)…I took him at his word.
Party on!
