New Yamaha Amp

Just put my new Yamaha A-S701 amplifier in service. Provides 220 wpc at 4 ohms to my AR3a. I am impressed.

Versions of Yamaha's TOP-ART 100 wpc amp has been around since at least the 2001 RX-777 receiver. It runs at about room temperature so it is under-stressed and with dual extruded aluminum heat heat-sinks, properly cooled. I have two of them. One serves as my computer amp and is on almost 24/7. Top photo is RX-777. Not much has changed in the S701.

100 into 8 Ohm. Should be 200 into 4 Ohm.

My reason for asking. I doubt this unit doubles down. The 6 ohm power doesn't give indication of getting 200 at 4. But we all know that good vintage gear bench's at 10-25% above spec. So I asked where the 220 number is from.

IIRC, the 6 Ohm rating is 130. Respectable but not a double downer (a term only an AK'er would appreciate.)

200 and 150 watts and neither doubles down, although both have a two ohm rating given by Yamaha.

These newer Yamaha integrateds are something I'd be seriously considering if I had a reliable reason to believe they would handle driving the Infinitys.

They both do just fine on NS-1000's. I have one of each.

the 220 wpc is not a number that I measured. It came from the specification info that was packed with the amp. Doesn't matter the exact number to me. I finally have an amp that has enough headroom to drive my 3a the way I want to hear them. I am very pleased with the amp.

More than doubling down just seemed flat out impossible so I checked out Yamaha's website.

Dynamic power 140/8, 170/6, 220/4 and 290/2. Makes sense now.
